Mr. Farthing told Sky News that he and his wife decided to go to Kabul Airport at night to avoid the “at least a few thousand people” crowds that flood into the airport every day.

He said: “Night travel obviously has its own dangers-this is a choice of two evils, and fortunately it has paid off.”

Mr. Farthing vowed not to leave the country until his employees and their families are safe. He told Sky that the flight was taking off “whether full or not” and added: “We will leave people behind, that is absolute given”.
