On which drugs does Medicare spend the most? – Healthcare Economist






Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) OK Medicare’s most expensive Part D drugs. This is an important question because CMS will begin drug price negotiations under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) for the top 10 drugs under Part D spending. Some relevant statistics and figures are below.

In 2021, Medicare Part D covers more than 3,500 prescription drug products, totaling $216 billion in spending, not including rebates paid by drug manufacturers to pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Top 10 best-selling Part D drugs accounted for 0.3% of covered drugs and 22% of total Medicare drug spending in 2021…top 100 drugs accounted for only 3% of covered drugs and 61% of total spending for the year
