Yesterday, OPPO held its annual technology event-OPPO INNO DAY 2021 in Shenzhen, China.
During the event, they announced two interesting new technologies, and they will officially release their first foldable smartphone OPPO Find N today.
OPPO’s first 6nm cutting-edge imaging NPU – MariSilicon
MariSilicon X It adopts advanced NPU, ISP and multi-layer memory architecture to provide incredible image processing capabilities with ultra-high energy efficiency. MariSilicon XIt is the first time to use complete image data to capture 4K AI night video in the RAW domain on an Android smartphone. The cutting-edge imaging NPU will debut on the Find X series in the first quarter of 2022, making it one of the most advanced commercial imaging NPUs on smartphones.
My technical expertise is limited, so I am not entirely sure how OPPO will integrate MariSilicon into their smartphones.You can’t just add this new chip to the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. It is called a system-on-chip for a reason, everything is integrated.
There are rumors that they are developing their own custom SoC for 2023 or 2024. According to reports, OPPO aims to use TSMC’s advanced 3nm process technology for chips.
One possibility is to use MediaTek Dimens 5G Open Source Architecture. However, I am not sure about the scope of customization of the open source architecture. Most of the custom chips introduced so far have undergone minor adjustments instead of adding entirely new hardware.

OPPO also released OPPO Air Glass, a breakthrough aR (Assisted Reality) device that uses a revolutionary monocle waveguide design inspired by the wings of a cicada, giving it a lightweight and simple appearance. It provides useful functions such as navigation, health data monitoring, teleprompter, and real-time speech-to-text translation without the need for large and heavy equipment.
OPPO Air Glass is equipped with a self-developed compact projection system-Spark micro projector-and a customized optical diffractive waveguide, which can provide vivid and clear aR display in various environments. The device can be operated with OPPO smartphones and smart watches. It also supports different intuitive interactions such as touch, voice, and motion control, enabling users to quickly and easily obtain information.
