Oral-B iO Series 8 vs iO9 vs Oral-B Genius X – Black Friday sale 2021

Sharing is caring!

2021 Prime Day Offer

This article was originally written in February 2020. Although I was a bit critical of Oral-B IO at first, it was more due to the high price of toothbrushes. Amazon currently says its suggested retail price is £449.99, which is enough to buy a decent laptop or a decent mobile phone. However, as usual, almost shortly after the release, the price fell to £224.99, which remained until mid-September, and then returned to the suggested retail price.

Last year, Oral-B iO8 fell to 180 pounds, and this year it fell to a record low of 149.99 pounds.

There is an updated Oral-B iO9 that claims to be discounted on Black Friday, but this is not entirely true, it has been around £250 for months (again below its ridiculous suggested retail price of £249.99)

Oral-B Genius X is priced at £300, which is a bit more reasonable. Recently it was priced at around £110, so the current price of £89.99 seems pretty good.

The alternative is Oral-B Genius, last year it was 70 pounds, but this year it was 80 pounds

A price below the price may show RRP instead of the lightning transaction price.

Oral-B iO8 and iO9

  • The suggested retail price of iO8 is 450 pounds, which is 50 pounds lower than iO9’s 500 pounds.
  • Both models are available in black onyx and white alabaster color options. iO9 is also available in rose quartz, while the 8 series is available in amethyst.
  • Compared with iO9’s 7 modes (daily cleaning, sensitive, intense, whitening, gum care and tongue cleaning), iO8 has 6 cleaning modes (daily cleaning, sensitive, super sensitive, intense, whitening and gum care).
  • iO9 has a full 3D tracking function, which can achieve cleaning performance that Series 8 does not have.
  • The iO9 comes with a power2go charging case that allows the iO to be charged internally, while the Series 8 comes with a standard travel case.

Original post

There are some important propositions behind the new Oral-B iO. It has been manufactured for 6 years, has more than 250 patents and a smooth magnetic system that is the first of its kind to provide an almost silent brushing experience. Something impressive, but what does all this mean?

At MWC 2019, I demonstrated the new Oral-B Genius XAt that time, there were many people claiming how great it was, and it was the first AI toothbrush, and its price was very high. It was 340 pounds when it was launched, and it is now priced at 169.99 pounds.

Oral-B Genius X is basically the same as the previous Oral-B Genius 9000, both are application controlled, including a 2-minute professional brush timer. Genius X just goes one step further by feeding back its position to your mouth, indicating area and pressure. It uses data and AI technology to track where you actually brush your teeth and provide personalized feedback on areas that require extra attention to improve oral health.

So, what has Oral-B iO added to justify 6 years of development and 250 patents?

From the press release:

  • The main functions of Oral-B’s iOTM include interactive screen display, visual timer, AI brushing recognition technology through Oral-B application, intelligent pressure sensor technology for optimal cleaning, and stylish magnetic charger. Oral-B reimagines, redesigns and redefines the function of the toothbrush, transforming brushing from what you have to do to what you want to do.
  • The interactive display allows easy browsing of brush functions and personalization: welcome greetings, brushing mode selection, language settings and reminders to change brush heads.
  • The intelligent pressure sensor guides the user to apply the best cleaning pressure. When the user applies the best cleaning pressure, the sensor warns of overpressure with a red light and a green indicator, maximizing the effectiveness of Oral-B iO’s™ iconic round brush head, inspired by dentist tools.
  • The stylish magnetic charger can be fully charged in about three hours. The brush display provides an easy-to-read battery level indicator.
  • The new Oral-B application provides 3D graphics and artificial intelligence brushing recognition technology to identify all areas in the mouth and guide users to complete 100% of the brushing area.
  • Visual Timer provides users with personalized guidance to help them achieve the best cleaning results. The timer keeps track of the duration of each tooth brushing, so users can know when they brushed their teeth for the two minutes recommended by the dentist. The smiley face icon on the display lets users know if they have reached their goal.

Oscillating rotation with new revolutionary micro-vibration.

When I originally published this article, the press release and information about the new Oral-B iO was a bit vague about how it outperforms the existing application-controlled, artificial intelligence-driven Genius X.

They have now kindly provided some instructions. iO clean uses brushing technology for the first time, combining oscillating rotation with a new revolutionary micro-vibration.

The traditional swinging and rotating back and forth cleaning movement and the micro-vibration up and down movement guide the iconic, dentist-inspired round brush head gently from one tooth to the other, ensuring maximum coverage of teeth and teeth in all directions Gums. Achieve iO cleaning.

Traditional gear-based drives have mechanical gears and rotating motors, which can cause friction, energy loss, and noise. Although the traditional Sonic technology also has magnets in the drive system, the movement energy is not always concentrated and the movement is more limited (lower amplitude). Oral-B iO transfers energy directly to the tips of the bristles, and has a larger range of motion to drive the swinging head.

The micro-vibration is caused by the high-frequency (145 Hz) direction change of the brush head, and the toothbrush bristles sweep across the tooth surface. This produces subtle vibrations that are synchronized with the head swing/rotation movement-this allows the brush to slide smoothly, tooth after tooth.

Obviously, this allows the toothbrush to achieve the lowest plaque score during the test.

So what is different from Oral-B Genius X?

The above figure shows that Genius X and 9000 are basically the same, but X has AI.

Now Oral B has clarified what the magnetic iO drive system is, which seems to be most of the work when developing this toothbrush.

In addition, the new Oral-B iO offers 7 brushing modes, while only 6 of the first two models. You will also get a small interactive display that provides information such as what mode you are in and the smiling face when you are done. Very useful.

What is its price and where can I buy it?

The technology of this toothbrush is so advanced that it is impossible to announce the price or release date.

The existing Genius X was launched at a price of 340 pounds sometime in the summer and was first listed on Amazon in early June. By the end of June, it fell to 160 pounds, as low as 110.50 pounds, and usually around 160 pounds.

As far as I know, the Oral-B Genius 9000 is actually outdated. It was launched sometime in 2016 at a price of about £300 and is now priced at about £120.

So I expect the price of this new toothbrush to be at least 340 pounds, possibly higher, and then drop by about 50% within a month.

What’s good?

I don’t want this article to be too negative, so I think it’s worth pointing out that Oral-B products have received incredible praise on Amazon and are better than Philips Sonicare DiamondClean in every way, the latter may be the main one Quality alternatives.

I cannot personally comment on the performance of Genius X because I have never reviewed it.

When i did a comparison Oral B and Philips Sonicare, The reviews of Oral-B Genius 9000 are much better than the reviews of DiamondClean, which is troubled by 1-star reviews.
