Our DIY Mud Room | New England Guide

It's hard to believe we bought this house four years ago. Somehow it feels like a lifetime and a brief moment at the same time. We did a lot of work on this house, from kitchen decoration, Converting our deck into a living/dining room, bathroom decorationand Converting our garage into a bedroom/bathroom. One of the last projects was a DIY mudroom. The original space was more like a covered entryway, but living in Vermont, an enclosed mudroom made more sense. While it's a small mudroom, it opens to a larger area that we transformed into tons of built-in storage using IKEA cabinets (I'll be sharing this space soon).

Enclosing this small space also makes our house more airtight and efficient. We now have two doors that help keep the space cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This DIY mudroom was completed in several stages over the course of several months. We started in the fall and then had to wait over the winter for some electrical work before we could put the finishing touches on it this spring. Replace siding, new windows

We had to replace the vinyl siding around the entire house. Underneath the vinyl was clapboard siding, which wasn't in great shape, so we had to tear off two layers before installing the nickel gap cypress. We also replaced all the windows. We removed the stone flower beds in the front of the house because they didn't drain well and pushed water toward the house, especially in the winter when snow would build up on the foundation. Installing a pea gravel drip edge is a major undertaking, but well worth the effort.

We utilized the existing footprint of the entryway to create the mudroom. Craig built the walls and installed windows on both sides. We also removed the old lights and front door.
