Pediatric Mortality Rise – Healthcare Economist

Some disturbing statistics released recently Woolf et al. (2023) use CDC WONDER data:

The all-cause mortality rate for children aged 1 to 19 increased by 10.7% between 2019 and 2020 and by another 8.3% between 2020 and 2020…These increases are the largest in decades and come after a period of Great strides have been made over the period to reduce pediatric mortality. Although the surge in pediatric mortality is mostly attributable to deaths in older children (10-19 years), all-cause mortality in younger children (1-9 years) also increased in 2021 (8.4%).

There were also marked differences in which groups were affected by the rise in mortality.

The increase in injury deaths in 2020 was predominantly among men… Non-Hispanic black youth accounted for two-thirds (62.9%) of homicide victims ages 10 to 19; 2021 homicides of non-Hispanic black youth ages 10 to 19 The rate is six times that of Hispanic youth and more than 20 times that of Asian/Pacific Islander non-Hispanic youth and white youth.

Additionally, gun violence has increased:

Firearms… are the leading cause of death among youth aged 1 to 19, accounting for nearly half (47.8%) of the increase in all-cause mortality in 2020

There are some very sobering statistics indeed.
