Police investigation after racist attack

NAfter a 20-year-old young man was attacked by racism in Bad Schlema (Erzgebirgskreis), a policeman is also under investigation. The 39-year-old man was allegedly involved in the dispute, as announced on Tuesday by the Zwickau police station where the man works. Disciplinary procedures have been instituted against him. “Racism and xenophobia have no place in the Saxon police force,” police chief Lutz Rodig emphasized.

According to earlier information from the Chemnitz Police Department, eight men between the ages of 37 and 49 initially insulted young Somalis in a “xenophobic” manner on a bus. Then at least two of them will push this person to the ground and kick him. He was slightly injured in the process. The bus driver has called the police. It is being investigated for dangerous physical injuries.

The police in Zwickau now stated that the officer apparently involved in the case went out privately that night. The police stated that in the video recording on the bus, “the police officer’s positive contribution to the dangerous bodily injury is not obvious”. “But it can also be seen that the police officer did not stop his personal attacks, nor did he lend a helping hand to the 20-year-old who was slightly injured.” It is necessary to check whether the police officer has committed a criminal offence.

Rico Gebhardt, the leader of the left-wing parliamentary caucus in the state legislature, expressed anger on Twitter. He wrote that among the Saxon police, a police officer who monitored someone being attacked “really has no status.” Clara Bünger, a candidate for the left-wing Bundestag in the electoral district where the attack occurred, called for a thorough clarification of the matter. “In the past, unfortunately, we often saw such cases have not been investigated, causing serious consequences to the affected people.” There is a suspicion of joint dangerous bodily injuries.
