Earlier, when a decision was initially postponed, a vote left the parliament pending for several hours, but then a vote was taken in the evening. According to the opposition, the law threatens freedom of the press and may affect relations with the United States.
The Warsaw Parliament resumed its meeting on Wednesday night, after a previous vote actually decided to postpone the meeting by 229 to 227 votes. But Elzbieta Witek, chairman of the parliament from the national conservative ruling party PiS, repeated the vote because she did not give a date to postpone the meeting. In the second round, 229 members opposed the postponement of the plenary meeting.
Morawiecki’s deputy enters the opposition
In the law reform dispute, the government alliance of PiS has collapsed. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki fired his deputy Jaroslaw Gowin, and his organization Porozumenie (understanding) ended its cooperation with PiS. The official reason for the 59-year-old Gowin’s dismissal was that his team did not carry out the PiS reform at a sufficient speed. Gowin has criticized the fact that a large-scale tax increase is planned for the planned economic stimulus plan.
Jan Strzezek, a spokesperson for Gowin, announced on Twitter that the company hopes to act as an independent parliamentary body from now on. Five deputy ministers of the Gowin camp volunteered to participate. Porozumenie, PiS and another small party formed the List Alliance “Combined Rights” and provided 12 of the 232 members of the government camp.
The plan proposed by PiS in July stipulates that only foreigners with “headquarters or residence in the European Economic Area” can obtain a broadcasting license. In addition, this condition applies to the licensee not to rely on a person who has a headquarters or domicile outside the economic zone.
According to critics, the law is aimed at the private broadcaster TVN, which is part of the American Discovery Group through a holding company registered in the Netherlands. The news channel TVN24 especially took the route of criticizing PiS. Gao Wen criticized the novella.
