Pope Francis undergoes colon surgery-Vatican

A Vatican statement stated that Pope Francis, 84, will undergo surgery for inflammation of the colon in Rome on Sunday.

It said that the Pope was taken to Gemelli University Hospital to “undergo scheduled surgery for symptomatic colonic diverticulum stenosis.”

The problem is the underlying painful inflammation of the diverticulum, which is a pocket that can form in the colon wall and increases with age.

A potential complication is abnormal narrowing of the colon.

A health announcement will be issued after the operation is completed.

Francis was born in Argentina on December 17, 1936, and lost part of his right lung at the age of 21. He also suffers from hip joint problems and sciatica.
