In 2023, the New Economics Foundation (NEF), the Center for Local Economic Strategies (CLES), UK Co-operatives and the Center for Thriving Places (CTP) jointly created the Regenerating Our Regional Economies (RORE) programme. RORE will run with three pilot joint jurisdictions for five years, until 2028, bringing communities together with political and institutional leaders to test ideas that can help rewire and reform economies so they can deliver for now and future generations. beautiful life.
In our first year at RORE, we were able to see first-hand the triumphs and challenges that authorities, communities and their partners face together. This short paper draws on these observations to explain why decentralization is necessary and valuable. We discuss the barriers that exist within the current devolution model and explain how the work we do in the West Midlands, North East and South Yorkshire will expand and expand on the excellent work being done by the combined authorities in these areas, to create a more equitable local economy. Finally, we provide some new insights into how national decentralization policies can be reformed to promote greater progress.
