Representative Jamaal Bowman to Speak at Columbia Climate School Graduation Ceremony

New York’s 16th Congressional District Representative Jamaal Bowman to deliver keynote speech at Columbia Climate Institute school day The ceremony will be held in person on Friday 12 May 2023 at the University’s Morningside Heights campus.
In announcing the news to the Columbia climate community, founding Dean Alex Halliday said, “As an activist, teacher, and advocate, Congressman Bowman has brought investment to his New York district to Supporting schools, climate change resilience, aged care, voter rights and civil rights. Rights. He is an excellent speaker who can recognize and celebrate the achievements of our students in climate schools and will inspire us all to create our own journeys and future efforts.”
Bowman grew up in public housing in New York City. He began his career as a crisis intervention teacher in the Bronx public schools, followed by ten years as a principal in Bronx middle schools. In 2020, he was elected to the United States Congress, where he stood with communities devastated by climate change, including Hurricane Ida, providing relief to families, individuals and small business owners. In 2021, Representative Bowman introduced Green New Deal legislation for public schools to build and retrofit carbon-free, climate-resilient K-12 public schools across the country.
