Review – I am a fan of the keto diet because it helps me keep my blood sugar levels within the non-diabetic range. I am in the pre-diabetes stage and continue to explore low-carbohydrate meal replacement foods, blood glucose monitoring systems, and current blood ketone meters, such as the iSens KetoSens blood ketone monitoring system. Let’s take a closer look.
What is it?
The iSens KetoSens blood ketone monitoring system is similar to the blood glucose monitoring system. Both systems use a drop of blood, but iSens KetoSens will report blood ketone readings. When the reading is higher than 0.1, it means that your body is burning fat instead of glucose (sugar) as fuel.
What’s in the box?

- iSens KetoSens blood ketone monitor
- 2 button batteries
- Blood collection device
- 10 lancets
- 10 keto bars

Design and features

The KetoSens ketone meter looks like most blood glucose meters I have used. This is a plastic device with a display and several buttons below the display.

On the back of KetoSens is a battery compartment.

The ketone meter is powered by 2 CR2032 button batteries included in the package.

It also includes a lancet device that is used to puncture your finger to draw a drop of blood to test the ketone level.

Unscrew the top of the lancet device to expose the lancet holder.

The KetoSens ketone meter comes with 10 lancets.

The lancet has a thin needle (smaller than my blood glucose meter lancet).
Use KetoSens ketone meter

The first thing you need to do is to install the battery into the device. Then you can turn on the device by pressing and holding the S button. You need to set the time and date so that you can review the old readings and know when they were recorded.

The next step is to wash your hands and then open one of the individually packaged ketone test papers.

Insert the strip into the groove on the bottom edge of the KetoSens ketone meter. The display on the meter will display the time and date, and wait for you to put a drop of blood on the test paper after puncturing your finger with the lancet device.

The test strip requires a very small amount of blood, and within a few seconds, the ketone reading will be displayed on the KetoSen display. This is my first reading. A reading above 0.1 means that your body is burning fat/ketones for fuel.

To test the accuracy of the iSens KetoSens ketone meter, I used my other ketone meter immediately after the KetoSens reading. As you can see, the results displayed by the two meters are exactly the same.

My ketones were a bit high the next day.
what do I like
- Simple to use
- Provides everything needed to quickly and accurately test ketone levels
- Requires a very small amount of blood
What will i change
- Test strips are cheaper
Final thoughts
Last fall, as part of the annual physical examination, I tested my A1C and found that the level was higher than the previous year. Although still in the pre-diabetes stage, I know that my eating habits have been “off track” due to working from home (thanks to COVID), and I know it’s time to take my diet/health seriously again. Although I am not overweight, I decided to try a ketogenic diet. Not to lose weight, but to lower my blood sugar level, because reducing carbohydrates is an easy way. I bought some ketone urine test strips, but found that it is not only messy, but it is also difficult to tell the exact ketone level because the test strips only show a range of colors. Using a blood ketone meter, the reading is much more accurate.
The iSens KetoSans ketone meter is affordable and easy to use. The only downside is the price of more strips. A pack of 50 strips costs about $40. Of course, you will not test your ketone body multiple times a day. With the use of mine FreeStyle Libre CGM To check my blood glucose reading, KetoSens will tell me that my A1C is at a low level during the next test.
