A woman seeks 3 million euros (2.5 million pounds) in compensation from the health department in the northern region Spain After she and another baby were accidentally delivered to the wrong family a few hours after they were born about 20 years ago.
The health authorities of the La Rioja region attributed the confusion in the maternity ward to “human error”, which was accidentally discovered after a DNA test.
The two babies were born five hours apart in a hospital in La Rioja in 2002. They were placed in an incubator due to underweight. One lives with her parents and the other is raised by a woman she thinks is a grandmother. In the ongoing legal proceedings, neither has been determined.
switch, This is reported by La Rioja newspaperFour years ago, she was discovered after the grandmother of the latter girl complained that her father had not fulfilled his responsibilities. The complaint involved a DNA test, which determined that he was not the girl’s father. Subsequent DNA tests revealed that she was not the child of the woman she believed to be her mother.
This discovery prompted an investigation by the district health authorities, which concluded that she might accidentally exchange with other babies.
Sara Alba, the health director of La Rioja, said at a press conference on Tuesday: “This is a human error and we cannot figure out who is to blame.”
“The system at the time was different, not as computerized as it is now,” Alba said, and promised that it won’t happen again.
La Rioja newspaper reported that another woman who was handed over to the wrong parents had been informed of the mistake.
The complainant’s lawyer, José Sáez Morga, stated that his 19-year-old client asked for 3 million euros in compensation because she suffered “serious negligence, it goes without saying”.
