Hessen State Police reported that on Monday, several students and faculty members felt sick after using the university’s materials science institute’s kitchen facilities and beverage dispensers. Some people saw their arms or legs turn blue.
Six people were treated at Darmstadt Hospital near Frankfurt, while a 30-year-old student was temporarily in a life-threatening condition but was stabilized by doctors on Monday night.
A homicide team with 40 detectives, called Light Darmstadt police and state prosecutors announced on Tuesday that they had set up (“light”) to investigate the case.
They said: “The investigation is proceeding at high speed, and the police are making every effort to identify the culprit.”
They suspected that several free milk and water bottles were contaminated on weekends in three separate kitchenettes on the Lichtwiese campus of the university.
Bild quoted anonymous investigators as saying that the police are ruling out the possibility that the poison may have been left accidentally.
Urge students to only consume food or drinks that they “carry or store under supervision.” It is recommended that those who have drunk the bottle purchased on campus and feel unwell to contact the doctor immediately.
The police said it was easy to identify the pollution due to the pungent smell of the suspected poison. Investigators said that they identified the substance after analyzing samples in a police laboratory overnight, but could not name it during the search for the culprit.
Senior prosecutor Robert Hartmann said at a press conference on Tuesday: “It has been determined that a substance may be harmful to human health, and it may even be fatal.”
“We are shocked by the apparent crimes committed by our university,” the university president Tanja Brühl said on Tuesday morning.
