widthIf he goes to a movie theater or bar in New York these days, he may feel that the pandemic is over. People are crowded in crowded bars, you can go to the movies without a mask, and you no longer need to keep your distance from your neighbors. Since all restrictions were lifted, New Yorkers have mainly worn masks on subways and buses. At the same time, however, the number of new Covid infections has doubled again: a few weeks ago there were about 200 new infections a day, and now there are more than 500. Despite the ambitious vaccination campaign, 64% of adults in New York City are fully vaccinated.
The increase in the number of infections is attributed to the delta variant of the virus, which now accounts for 40% of new infections. It reflects the trend of the country. Less than four weeks ago, an average of 11,000 new cases were recorded every day across the country. There are now 28,000 new infections in an average of 7 days. Hospitals in particularly severely affected states such as Louisiana and Mississippi reported that their intensive care units were again crowded with Covid-19 patients. In Mississippi, there are currently 7 children infected with the virus in the intensive care unit, and only 33.5% are fully vaccinated.

In the entire country, it accounts for almost half of the population. Even so, the number of cases is increasing in almost all states. In recent weeks, there have been particularly many new infections in countries with low vaccination rates. For example, in Arkansas, fewer than 200 people were newly infected every day in early June—now there are nearly 1,000 people every day. Authorities blamed the delta variant for the increase in southern states and called for people to be vaccinated. In contrast, in some areas with high vaccination rates, the number of people infected is very small. Vermont is the state with the highest immunization rate, reporting an average of 11 new infections every day within 7 days. Nearly 75% of people have been vaccinated once or twice, and the state is close to herd immunity.
Vermont has a moderate Republican governor Phil Scott, but it is one of the freest states. Even during the deadliest period of the pandemic, other Republican states made headlines with aggressive opening strategies. This includes Florida, where there are currently more than 5,600 new infections every day. All protection rules against viruses will expire in the spring. Sunny states have repeatedly reported that the authorities may have set the death toll too low. The current official death toll is 38,000. In the United States, more than 608,000 people have died after being infected with Covid-19.
