TonHis sensitive and shrewd Sundance award-winning documentary, in which Iryna Tsilyk, a coach and poet, haunted the back alleys of the Russo-Ukraine War, was an antidote to distorted propaganda. The conflict was Portrayed as 2018 movie Donbass. It cleverly layered fact and fiction like an onion, because it focuses on the Trofymchuk-Gladky family, who are trying to film their own fiction piecemeal based on their wartime experience, called 2014. But, here, the technique and the film serve the good. For Ukrainians who have been defeated in the battle of the past ten years, they are a source of self-expression and spiritual nourishment.
Tsilyk directed the up-and-coming filmmaker Myroslava Trofymchuk at a seminar. What we see here is the teenager giving orders to her family as they perform in a scene where they squat in the cellar; they are shocked and shocked by real life at the same time. Echoes of trauma, check bomb damage through smart phone lights. The whole family-including single mother Anna and her three other children-obviously put a lot of energy into this project, arguing about the choice of shots during dinner. After ecstatically celebrating her daughter’s film scholarship in Kiev, Anna packed her up and was still in a highly protected mode: “The only thing, I beg you, if you are being bullied, please call me.”
Cautious self-reflection settles down like a grain of snow. Once, Myroslava persuaded some patrol soldiers to participate in an episode where Anna played a mother asking them for medicine-then Anna stopped acting and explained to them the real events that inspired it. Throughout the process, Tsilyk observes the family at work and takes a break in the beautiful, pale cinematography.
In the fiction of this family, the war itself even began to take on a temporary and fictitious nature. The creative bolt hole that escaped from it opened; towards the end, one of the boys played a folk melody on the accordion, accompanied by a cheerful whisper of “Whoo-hoo!”. The aura of family affection, love and the tenacious power of art gather around this movie.
