Florida International University is working hard to make the world a better place.
Therefore, it uses a real weapon that has been tried and tested in war: words.
The school released “Academic and Student Affairs”Inclusive language guide“So it can teach you which terms to exclude.
It comes from a sensible source: FIU’s Office of Social Justice and Inclusion.
The manual begins by saying: “Language is a way of communicating, recognizing and verifying identities, ideas, concerns, requirements, and culture. Inclusive language conveys our values.”
“We chose to represent our values and ideals at Florida International University,” it heralded, “as Included, Respectful and kind. “
Several goals guide:
- Meet the inclusive standards of professional or social communication
- Reflect and support people’s choice of identity in terms of names, pronoun usage and other related identity verification languages
- An agent that verifies the individuals mentioned in determining their own identity and needs
So how is inclusiveness achieved?
Several examples are provided in the form of do and don’t do.
Positive and affirmative: “Please help these people find their seats. “
Non-inclusive: “Please help these gays find their seats. “
Don’t use description as a noun:
right: “I want to know how to best support homosexuals.”
Incorrect: “I want to know how to best support homosexuals.”
The decree warns against using hyphenated racial terms, such as “American Indian”; instead, choose separate words, such as “indigenous people.”
Also, don’t say things like “you throw things like a girl”, “boys don’t cry” or “masculinity”.
And avoid all the following situations:
- Freshman
- Man-made
- Manhole
- manpower
- Humanity
- Working hours
Use “waitress” instead of “waitress”.
they are”Firemen,” instead of “fireman”.
And work your way this: Don’t use the “non-inclusive” label “gay”, but use the “positive and positive” “gay”.
Also, don’t forget to cross out (cross out) your T:
Non-inclusive: “LGBTQ people (only when talking about sex or LGBQ people)”
Positive and positive: “LGBQ”
Moving on, the Office of Social Justice and Inclusion rang “Ms. /Miss/Madam/Mr/Mr/Ms/Madam.”
It’s like rain: Mx.
As for gender:
Incorrect: she he
right: Them/theyIncorrect: Guys/ladies and gentlemen
right: You/guys/everyone/guestsIncorrect: Born male, born male
right: Cisgender Man / Cis ManIncorrect: Real women, not transgender, normal gender
right: Female/Male designated at birth
“Father” is offensive:
Incorrect: Mom/daddy or mom/daddy
right: Parents, family members
Along these routes, Don’t bag “Boyfriend” or “Girlfriend”.
Instead, date an “important other person”, “lover” or “partner”.
If you plan to be a parent and want to marry your partner first… please make sure Priest minister The host(?) of the ceremony will not say, “You can kiss the bride.”
Correct: “You can kiss each other.”
School explain, “The use of inclusive and welcoming oral and written language is the standard for all of our departmental documents, letters, marketing materials, academic course materials, presentations, dialogues, lectures, syllabuses, and written and oral student evaluation materials.”
In addition: “We should pay attention to individuals or social groups who are currently or historically marginalized and oppressed.”
In my opinion, this is a strange set of instructions.
The point of “You Can Kiss the Bride” is to give a couple the status of “married”.
“You can kiss each other” implies the official responsible for whether they can shut up.
In addition, “American Indians” usually do not have hyphens.
As for being “indigenous”, it is believed that the ancestors of this tribe came to North America from Asia Passing through the Bering Strait.
But beyond the instructions of the guide, if I may say so, FIU ignores the main purpose of the text.
They are not meant to be inclusive; they are destined to be specific.
This is how syllables can be expressed.
Speaking of mom, why not reject dad?
This is an issue with the Office of Social Justice and Inclusion, which held a conference in May freedom of speech
event.
In this regard, the school Can Just let people say how they feel—of course, in a respectful way.
But it seems that this option cannot be included.
