The number of overnight stays in Italy has risen sharply

DIn the summer of 2021, the number of overnight stays in Italy by foreign guests has increased significantly. Ansa News Agency reported on Saturday that Florence’s Institut Centro Studi Turistici (CST) and Rome’s business association Assoturismo Confesercenti estimated that the number of overnight stays between June and August was approximately 35 million. This number is higher than in the past summer of 2020 in Corona, when approximately 28 million overnight accommodations from abroad were registered. However, they are not close to the time before the corona. In the summer of 2019, experts recorded more than 100 million people staying overnight abroad.

Ansa quoted CST and Assoturismo Confesercenti as saying that people mainly come from IThe number has picked up, especially tourists from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland and France. However, when it comes to tourism from Russia, they have collapsed.

Criticism from mountaineers

South Tyrol can also feel the increase in the number of summer holidaymakers. This summer, in the area around the famous Sella Ronda hike and ski tour in the Dolomites east of Bolzano, many tourists drove out in their cars-which annoyed some South Tyroleans.

The Republican newspaper quoted the climbing legend in the Saturday edition Reinhold MessnerWho talked about the deterioration compared to previous years. “Cars are parked everywhere: on the street, on the grass, in the woods. Is this the landscape we want to give to our guests?” The problem of excessive tourists in natural areas has been controversial for many years. Messner asked that people should be able to enter the mountains from valleys by other means to prevent “car avalanches” from appearing outside the landscape.
