Tips for Quitting Coffee (And What to Try)


Due to various health concerns, I recently decided to cut coffee from my diet. I know…it feels very intimidating and honestly a little sad. For many of us, coffee is an integral part of our morning ritual. Grinding beans, cooking pots, smells wafting from the kitchen into your home, and pouring warm liquids into your favorite mug is really my favorite way to wake up.

Not just quitting coffee, but quitting the ritual of it all is hard. People cut coffee out of their diets for a variety of reasons. Some people cut coffee for mental health reasons, as coffee can exacerbate anxiety symptoms by increasing heart rate and blood pressure. Others stop drinking coffee because it affects the quality of their sleep.

So how do you get rid of coffee without losing it? If you’ve been drinking one or more cups of coffee a day for years, it can be really hard to quit smoking or take a break.It is important to prepare for success and try to avoid some of the negative effects of trying to break this habit

Since I’ve been cutting coffee out of my diet, I wanted to share some tips for quitting smoking or cutting back on coffee, as well as some alternative beverage options.

Tips for quitting coffee

Easy entry.

If you’re an avid coffee lover, say two or more cups a day, you may need to wean yourself off coffee before jumping off the wagon. Maybe reduce your intake to one cup a day for a week or two before cutting the cold turkey. Another way is to start slowly making your coffee less strong over time.

If you’ve been drinking coffee for a long time, you’ll likely need to replace it with something for pain relief. Try adding something special to your routine. Choose one of the alternatives I listed above, or choose another healthy alternative. Replacing bad habits with other bad habits won’t help you in the long run, so try to stay strong.

Set reasonable expectations

Depending on your reasons for quitting coffee, try to set yourself up for success. Try slowly reducing your coffee intake first, or if you want to go all out, go for it! Just know that withdrawals can be a rough week or two if you drink coffee every day. If you still want to grab a cup of coffee every now and then, that’s okay too!

If you choose to quit coffee and cold turkey, you may be prone to headaches. A friend of mine said she never had coffee withdrawal symptoms when she switched to Dandy’s blend. Depending on whether you’re trying to cut down on caffeine altogether, you can try a variety of teas. Tea generally contains less caffeine than a cup of coffee, but also contains high amounts of antioxidants. If you avoid caffeine altogether, try decaffeinated tea.
