Just days before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, a member of the US women’s gymnastics team tested positive for COVID-19 in Japan. The identity of the gymnast has not been revealed, but it has been confirmed that the gymnast is a substitute.
Four-time gold medalist Simone Biles and other top players on the team have not tested positive or conducted contact tracing. Another substitute in the team was quarantined because she was a close contact of an athlete who was infected with the coronavirus.
Kayla DiCello, Kara Eaker, Emma Malabuyo and Leanne Wong are the four substitutes for the US women’s team.
The US Gymnastics team said in a statement: “After reviewing the implementation of the COVID agreement with members of the delegation, the local government determined that the affected substitute athlete and another substitute athlete will be subject to additional isolation restrictions.” statement.
