Review – I have been following the new Ultimate Ears (UE) Wonderboom 2 for a while.I tried EU Super Prosperity 3 And I really like to use it, but I always want something smaller and more portable.I tried the smaller UE boom 2 But I am not particularly obsessed with it. Will Wonderboom 2 be what I want? I have a chance to try it, wow, I’m so glad I did it! It sounds great for such a small speaker and is more portable than Megaboom 3. When the volume is moderate, I can play for about 30 hours with a full charge. A higher volume will reduce the playback time, and the UE website says that the playback time is about 13 hours. You may need to be aware that it lacks AUX audio port and call function.

Design and features

UE Wonderboom 2 is a small portable Bluetooth speaker. There are slightly recessed silicone caps on the top and bottom.

There are the following buttons on the top of the speaker (starting from the top): Bluetooth pairing button (small white circle flashing in pairing mode), center button for control (large center circle), and power on/off button (button that looks like a dash – It emits white light when the speaker is turned on).

Like the original Wonderboom, Wonderboom 2 also has large silicone “+” (volume up) and “-” (volume down) buttons on the front.

I really like the two-color mesh fabric that covers most of the speakers. A convenient elastic orange ring is attached to the top of the speaker, and there is a small silicone wrap around it for easy gripping.

There is an outdoor mode button at the bottom of the speaker (the tree in the center of the bottom of the speaker). This should improve loudness and clarity when you are outdoors. When the outdoor mode is turned on, the tree will emit a white light.

There is also a micro USB port on the bottom of the speaker with a silicone cover to protect the port from water and elements.

set up

The best “User Guide” I found for Wonderboom 2 is actually the inner lid of the box, as shown in the picture above.

Interestingly, you won’t use the app on Wonderboom 2 like some other UE portable speakers.

Bluetooth pairing: To pair the Wonderboom 2 speaker with your mobile device (Android and iOS), first make sure to turn on the device’s Bluetooth. If your speaker is new, when it is powered on (long press the power button to turn it on), it is already in pairing mode.

However, if you want to pair it with another device, turn on the speaker and press and hold the Bluetooth button for about three seconds until you hear a series of rising tones, put it in pairing mode. When the speaker is in pairing mode, the Bluetooth button will flash white quickly. Finally, in the Bluetooth settings of your device, click “Wonderboom 2” in the list of discovered devices. After the speakers are paired, you will hear the pairing tone.

Performance

size: Wonderboom 2 is a very beautiful small size. It is 4 inches (104 mm) high, 3.75 inches (95.3 mm) in diameter, and weighs 15 ounces. (420 grams).

As shown in the picture above, it is more portable than Megaboom 3.

Charging time: The UE website states that it takes approximately 2.6 hours to fully charge Wonderboom 2. I found that I can use the micro USB cable to charge the speaker in about 2.5 hours.

Determining the amount of power remaining in the speaker is a bit difficult to determine. Like other UE portable speakers, you must simultaneously press the large “+” (volume up) and “-” (volume down) buttons on the speaker. But for Wonderboom 2, when the battery power is high, you will hear some rising tones, when the remaining battery power is moderate, you will hear some sounds, and when the battery power is low, you will hear some falling tones.

play time: According to the UE website, the Wonderboom 2 speakers can play about 13 hours of music after being fully charged. I was able to play music on the speakers at low volume for about 30 hours before the speakers were turned off. This is really impressive. During the day I use speakers to provide background music, so the playback time seems to last forever. If you use it at a medium volume or higher volume, your playback time may be reduced a lot.

Automatic shutdown: If Wonderboom 2 is turned on and left idle for about 15 minutes, it will automatically turn off.

Center button control: Wonderboom 2 has a central button for controlling music. Click to pause/play the music, double click to skip the track. I use it without any problems.

Pair the speakers: You can connect Wonderboom 2 to another Wonderboom 2 or Wonderboom. However, it does not connect with Boom, Megaboom, Blast or Megablast speakers.

According to UE website FAQ, “To pair WONDERBOOM 2 with another WONDERBOOM or WONDERBOOM 2, please press and hold the center buttons on both speakers at the same time until you hear the pairing tone. You will hear another tone confirming the successful pairing.” Unfortunately, I don’t have Wonderboom or other Wonderboom 2 to try this.

Bluetooth connection and range: When testing the connectivity, I found that the speaker maintains a Bluetooth connection with my Pixel 2 XL through four walls. I can even leave my phone in a room in the far corner of our 2400 square foot single-story house and move around without any interruption in the connection.

water-proof: Wonderboom 2 has an IP67 degree of protection, so it can be immersed in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. It will float!

Drop test: According to the UE website, Wonderboom 2 has undergone a drop test at 5 feet/1.5 meters. Good news for clumsy people like me! I will not test it on purpose, but I believe I will accidentally at some point.

Frequency Range: The specifications indicate that the frequency range of the speakers is 75 Hz – 20 kHz. Excellent! The lower bass response may be why I prefer this small speaker to Boom 2, it only drops to 90 Hz.

Audio quality: The sound quality of Wonderboom 2 is impressive for a speaker of this size (for my untrained non-audiophile). I think that when listening to all types of music, all frequencies are clean, clear and relatively balanced. It missed some of the deeper bass in electronic/electronic music, but it did pick up an impressive amount of bass.

Need a speaker that can be heard outdoors? Wonderboom 2 is your great portable choice. It becomes very loud at maximum volume.

The only thing I can think of is that Wonderboom 2 lacks an AUX audio port, which is used to physically connect a mobile device to play music, and has no call function.

what do I like

  • For such a small speaker, the sound quality is impressive
  • It’s small and portable
  • It plays at low volume for a long time (about 30 hours)
  • It can become very loud and easily heard outdoors
  • It is very sturdy and has undergone a drop test of 5 feet/1.5 meters
  • It is waterproof (IP67 rating) and floats in water
  • The whole house keeps bluetooth connection, no disconnection
  • The center button on the top of the speaker allows you to play, pause and skip tracks and pair with another Wonderboom/Wonderboom 2

What will i change

  • It lacks AUX audio port and call function

Final thoughts

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 is an excellent portable speaker. The sound quality of such a small speaker is impressive. When listening to all types of music, the audio is clear and clear. The speakers are also durable (tested by UE drop from 5 feet/1.5 meters) and waterproof (IP67 rating).

Before purchasing Wonderboom 2, there are a few things to consider-it has no call function and no AUX audio port. If this is not important to you (like me), then I think you will like Wonderboom 2 as much as I do!
