Design and Features

The UGREEN 100W USB C Wall Charger is designed to replace the collection of power bricks you have to carry around to charge everything. The metallic finish and black trim look lovely.

The charger weighs half a pound and is larger than a typical iPad/iPhone brick. But it’s smaller than a MacBook power brick and weighs about the same. See pictures for reference:

The power prongs on the charger fold into the body of the device for easy packing and travel.

The business end of the UGREEN 100W USB C Wall Charger Brick features three USB-C ports and one USB-A port for plugging everything in.

It’s important to note that not all USB-C ports are created equal. The top two ports are rated to support up to 100W of power, while the third USB-C port and USB-A port provide 22.5W of power. The UGREEN 100W USB C Wall Charger uses GaN smart technology for fast charging…but it also regulates power per port when you plug in multiple devices. It also continuously monitors the temperature of the charger to prevent overheating. We will discuss in the next section.

Performance

The UGREEN 100W USB C Wall Charger is perfect for minimizing your EDC kit. Gone are the days of multiple bricks in my bag. I keep this guy in my briefcase whenever I need to charge my MacBook, my work headphones, my iPhone, or any combination of the above. The USB-A port can be used for weird peripherals like my earbuds.

If you use multiple devices, the charging situation will take some getting used to. As mentioned above, the charger comes with two full-power USB-C 100W ports for laptops, a 22.5W USB-C port, and a 22.5W USB-A port for phones/tablets/peripherals. However, these are the maximum power output ranges. Once you start plugging in multiple devices, the charger adjusts power to each port based on usage. Take a look at the chart below:

This all means that you won’t be able to fully charge your MacBook Pro, for example, if you’re using other ports. It also means you might not be able to take full advantage of fast charging, depending on what’s plugged in.

Is this a problem? It depends on your situation. I took this brick with me on a recent vacation trip and my wife and I use it to keep our phones and tablets charged between uses. Individual devices don’t hit those higher thresholds, so we don’t have a problem. However, if I have the MacBook and peripherals plugged in, it will take more time to fully charge given the laptop’s power requirements. I do notice that the charger gets hot when the laptop is plugged in with other peripherals, and I’m doing heavy work on the laptop (like a long video conference), but when the demand is high I’m not charging from other seen on the device.

One final note on overall usage: you only have one USB-A port. Most of my stuff is USB-C now, so that’s not a problem for me, but you’ll need to consider your device needs to determine if this is right for you.

what do I like

  • No need to carry multiple chargers
  • Great for EDC and travel, especially with folding plugs
  • Four ports give you enough room to charge everything

Areas for improvement

  • One USB-A port may not be suitable for all users
  • The more plugged in, the slower the overall charging performance
  • It can get hot with multiple devices, especially if one device is a high consumption device like a laptop

final thoughts

I love the solution to downsizing the kit, and the UGREEN 100W USB C Wall Charger delivers on that promise. This is handy for everyday EDC and travel, and I’m happy with how it performed in both cases. Just make sure to check your device requirements to make sure it can meet your power requirements.
