URC wraps up Environment Month celebrations with national tree planting drive


Universal Robina Corporation (URC) has wrapped up the celebration of Philippine Environment Month with a nationwide tree-planting campaign. From Bulacan to Davao, URC staff and volunteers have planted more than 6,000 saplings through simultaneous tree planting activities in 25 districts.

With the theme of “Protecting Nature, Safeguarding Our Future”, this event aims to promote environmental awareness and the relevance of conservation; strengthen its values ​​of environmental stewardship and earth-friendly culture, and use people’s participation to promote environmental compliance and best practices best practice.

“This is an important step in realizing our ambition to be a sustainable global business. We cannot accomplish all of this without the support of our partners,” said URC CEO Irwin Lee.

“We at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) encourage the URC to continue building on the successes that have already begun and make more things happen,” shared DENR representative Jean Borromeo at the opening of the URC Environment Month programme.

URC held a tree-planting event on June 25 to coincide with the Philippine Arbor Day celebrations.

Employees of the URC business units – Branded Consumer Foods Group, Flour and Bakery, Sugar and Renewables and Agro-Industrial Group – plant endemic saplings such as bamboo, mangroves, Nara and Bali Tahan,and many more.

In addition to tree planting, URC celebrated Philippine Environment Month with events including a coastal cleanup in Sariaya, Quezon Province, webinars on sustainability and sharing best practices.

These activities are in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which aims to combat climate change and address its impacts.

For this project, URC has partnered with various organizations such as Pasig City Parks and Playgrounds Development Office, Clean and Green Pasig, DENR – Environmental Authority, Office of Urban Environment and Natural Resources, Municipal Office of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippines The port authority, and local government units in various locations conduct tree planting activities.

The month-long campaign is based on Presidential Proclamation Series No. 237 of 1998, declaring June as the month dedicated to the environment.
