Gaming laptop monitors have become more advanced in recent years, following the desktop monitor trend. You’ll have to look for the most affordable gaming laptops to get a 60Hz-only Full HD display.
Gaming laptops running at least 1920×1080 at 120Hz or more commonly 144Hz are the norm these days.
On the higher end of the spectrum, you have laptops like the Razer Blade 15 Advanced with a 1920×1080 display with a 360Hz refresh rate.
Alternatively, QHD or 2560×1440 are becoming more common, with laptops like the MSI GS66 Stealth 15″ running at 240Hz.
1440p with a high refresh rate has long been the best choice for many regular monitors, and I think that’s true for high-end gaming laptops as well.
More and more laptops are equipped with 4K displays. A lot of the time, this tends to be when laptops are designed for creators, not gamers. The GIGABYTE AERO series features a 4K AMOLED display with incredible black and color accuracy that looks absolutely stunning, but a 60hz display isn’t ideal for many gamers.
More and more laptops are starting to feature 4K 120Hz displays. They’re a bit niche and require top specs to run games at their highest settings. However, they tend to be very high-quality panels with 100% AdobeRGB color space, high brightness, and all the other features you’d expect from a premium monitor.
As such, these laptops are perfect for anyone looking for an all-in-one work and gaming solution.
Laptops with 4K 120Hz Screens
For simplicity, I’ve listed the latest generation. Some of them have only just been announced, so may not be available yet. The last generation will most likely also have a 4K 120Hz display (such as the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo).
I’m pretty sure most laptops use the same display panel. It’s just that the Acer and the two Asus laptops are different.
With several options discontinued, this is a very short list of 4k 120Hz laptops.
Acer Predator Helios 500
- Intel Core i9-11980HK processor
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080
- 17” 4K/120Hz microLED display
A generation Review of the Acer Predator Helios 500 Recently, it prompted me to write this article to see what else. It’s definitely a beast, but at 4kg, it’s not something you’d want to carry around often.
ASUS ProArt Studio Volume 1
- Intel Core i9-9980HK processor
- Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000
- 15.6″ IPS 4K 120Hz
I don’t think you’ll ever be able to buy this again, and you probably can’t afford the crazy $10k price tag. This is a laptop that is very focused on professional users.
ASUS ROG SE Duo 16 (2022)

- Up to AMD Ryzen 9 6980HX
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti
- 16 inch WQUXGA(3840×2400) 120Hz
One of the craziest laptops on the market with a dual-screen design. The main 4K display is a non-standard aspect ratio, with a little extra height compared to normal 4K. Then, you can also use the 14-inch 3840 x 1100 secondary display that supports stylus.
The Duo 16 has just been released and it’s the first to feature the AMD Ryzen 9 6980HX and GeForce RTX 3080 Titanium.
Last year the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE went on sale at Curry’s for £3600, and I’d expect this to be a lot more expensive.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus S17 GX703 GX703HS-KF075T
- Intel Core i7-11800H processor
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080
- 17” 4K/120Hz LED display
The ROG Zephyrus S17 comes in several variants. This one will set you back around £3300
Alien X17

- Intel Core i9-11980HK processor
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080
- 17” 4K/120Hz LED display
There are two variants with 4K displays. Both come with an RTX 3080, but one comes with an i7 11800H for £3400 and the other with an i9 11980HK for £3750
MSI GS76 Stealth

- Intel Core i9-11900H processor
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080
- 17” 4K/120Hz LED display
This one is £4300 from Scan! However, it is thinner and lighter than the Acer. The 15-inch MSI GS66 can only do 60Hz.
Razer Blade 17

- Intel Core i9-11900H processor
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080
- 17.3″ IPS 4K 120 Hz and touch
Cheaper than the MSI at £4000 with a touchscreen.
