Medical City Investment The March 28-30 event at The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago will not only mark our return to live events, but will also highlight a portfolio of various healthcare startups as part of the Pitch Perfect competition. We’ve previewed three of the four pitch tracks so far, and only one remains: Diagnostics 2.0.
Such startups are developing creative testing methods, such as at-home testing (whether in kits with immediate results, or kits that can be used to test at home and easily mailed) or instant post-testing with immediate results.

Here are the companies:
Integrating rapid sample processing, analyte isolation, and multiplex immunoassays into point-of-care (POC) diagnostic platforms can be a game-changer for personalized health, remote monitoring, and public health screening. Bio-MEMS Diagnostics Seeking to achieve this with BioMicro Electro Mechanical Systems (BioMEMS) – a non-invasive sampling of complex biological fluids in a portable instrument for quantitative analysis of panels of biomolecules by ultra-sensitive electrochemical immunoassay (EC-IA) . BioMEMS assays can detect single viruses, bacteria or human cells or fragments, hormones, cytokines and other organic molecules (femolecular sensitivity) in one milliliter of sample in a small single-use kit. This ultra-high sensitivity surpasses most laboratory-based analytical methods. BioMEMS detection panels have proven useful in anti-aging, infection, autoimmune and fertility applications. The company recently completed a feasibility study with DSM NV and Bayer. In addition, it began shipping its Gen 1 benchtop analyzer to university research labs in late March 2022. Based in Michigan, BioMEMS is seeking early-stage funding.
myBiometry The mission is to end asthma attacks. Asthma is an $82B problem in the US with 10 million exacerbations and 16 million uncontrolled patients each year. 62% of asthma management failures were due to its reactivity. Intervention occurs only after symptoms or attacks. Our platform combines proprietary diagnostics, biomarkers and digital health with machine learning and care teams to monitor patients at home. It prevents symptoms and attacks by providing guideline-based guidance and education to at-risk patients.
ENTvantage Dx, is a clinical trial stage diagnostics company providing primary care and otolaryngologists with timely information about the causes of ear, nose and throat disorders through rapid, in-office diagnostic tests. Point-of-care test kits include proprietary collection devices, bacterial test kits, and optical readout devices that provide accurate, rapid in-office diagnostic test results for the determination of bacterial sinusitis. The Sinu-Test® Bacterial Sinusitis Test is a Class II DeNovo diagnostic kit that definitively diagnoses bacterial sinusitis and differentiates it from the more common viral sinusitis. The Sinu-Test diagnostic kit will help providers reduce the number of unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, increase clinic revenue using established CPT reimbursement codes, pay $55 per test, and reduce the overall cost of treatment for these conditions from $400 to $125 with a sinus test.Clinical trials underway in the US

NoMo Diagnostics developed what it claims is the first wearable neurodiagnostic device to monitor brain health in real-time over a lifetime. An undiagnosed concussion is an untreated concussion. NoMo Tech specializes in evaluating traumatic brain injuries in contact sports athletes, military personnel, and industrial workers. Depending on the sport, an estimated 4-5 concussions go unrecognized for every 1 concussion diagnosed, leaving most people vulnerable to repetitive concussions and increasing the risk of musculoskeletal injury (50-300). %). If left untreated, repetitive concussions can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which can lead to serious neurological health problems ranging from mood disturbances to dementia. Fully automated as an edge AI medical device, EEG monitoring technology can provide immediate physiologically relevant results and simultaneously alert caregivers or parents through telemetry, prompting clinicians to conduct comprehensive brain health assessments. Longitudinal tracking using the HL7 protocol establishes a digital health record of the brain that can be fully integrated into an individual’s EHR. Through a novel medical device-as-a-service business model, we plan to offer our own proprietary headbands and utilize current helmet/headwear manufacturer product placements as accessories.

Max Medical is an innovative company based in Europe that develops and manufactures medical devices for diagnostic purposes. Focused on simplifying diagnosis, MESI provides clinicians with predictive medical assessments that help them detect disease at an early stage and ensure successful treatment for all patients. These solutions are suitable for all healthcare settings from personal practice to hospital and home care. With strong in-house R&D and certified production facilities, it considers itself a trusted supplier of digital and connected diagnostic equipment.

Vitascan is a personal nutrition company. It performs laboratory-quality point-of-care testing, analyzing a drop of blood for key nutritional markers.

healthy uncle Developed proprietary biosensor technology to bring laboratory testing to the point of care to improve patient outcomes. Using this technology, ZiO Health has developed a therapeutic drug monitoring device – a powerful tool for individualizing doses to improve drug efficacy. The device measures plasma drug concentrations at the point-of-care and combines health data (i.e. pharmacokinetics) with real-time test results (plasma drug concentrations) through a software component to provide instant personalized dose adjustment information.
