Zoo fire killed animals including meerkats, parrots and turtles

Among the animals that died after a fire in a popular petting zoo were cats and a giant tortoise Essex.

At around 1:15 am on Monday, Essex Fire and Rescue Service personnel rushed to the Maldon Promenade Petting Zoo on the Dungui Peninsula. The fire covered the barn at the attraction.

Cockatoos, macaws, parrots, mongooses, armadillos, skunks and a giant tortoise were killed in the fire, which killed at least 25 animals in the early morning.

Three firefighters-including firefighters from Burnham, Malden and Tillingham-managed to put out the fire.

The zoo paid tribute to their lost animals in a Facebook post on Monday.

It read: “These are just some amazing characters and personalities lost. I extend my heartfelt love to all of them and will miss you, RIP.

“Thank you very much for your support. We do have some little guys who still depend on us. We must make sure to do our best to support them at this tragic time. Our zoo will reopen, but we hope to have a little time to feel sad for this tragedy. .”

According to the zoo’s Facebook page, it is believed that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning refrigerator.

It added: “We will never forget the beautiful animals we lost in such a tragic situation. Some of the little guys on our private farms have retired, rested, or unwanted pets that we worked hard to take care of before.

“We take all precautions to prevent fires/accidents. Our electrical appliances are regularly tapped and tested. We have certified electricians to deal with any problems at any time, regularly accept health and safety audits by ourselves and external consultants, and conduct regular fire risk assessments. , Two years ago, we also received guidance from the fire department to try and prevent accidental fires.

“Nevertheless, we still can’t prevent the refrigerator from catching fire, but we will do our best to learn from what happened and teach us the beautiful animals, employees, family, and of course all the customers who feel this. Apologize for the failure.”

The Essex County Fire and Rescue Bureau said: “When arriving, staff reported that a 20-meter by 30-meter barn was 100% on fire.
