Regarding the news of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra’s global launch, I’m a little late to the news, so I won’t go into too much detail as it’s already covered elsewhere.
It’s worth mentioning because I think it’s one of the most attractive specs on this year’s flagship phone, especially considering the price.
ZTE Axon 40 Ultra key specs

- 6.8-inch 120Hz 116 x 2480 pixel AMOLED display, 1500 nits (peak)
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
- Base Specs: 128GB / 8GB RAM
- rear camera:
- 64 MP, f/1.6, 35mm (standard), 1/1.7 inch, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS
- 64 MP, f/3.5, 91mm (periscope telephoto), 1/2″, PDAF, OIS, 3.5x optical zoom (vs. 26mm cam)
- 64 MP, f/2.4, 16mm (ultra wide), 1/1.7″, PDAF
- Front camera:
- 16 MP, f/2.0, 26mm (wide), 1/2.8″, 1.22µm, below display
- Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable
- Charging: 65W, no wireless
This is an affordable flagship phone, so the lack of wireless charging or faster wired charging is forgivable.
It’s a massive 6.8-inch phone with a very bright display, and while it’s not an LPTO, that’s usually a feature of high-end models.
The standout feature is the front-facing camera below the display, which means the huge 6.8-inch display is completely undisturbed.
Then you have three 64MP cameras on the rear. Main and ultrawide is the brand new Sony IMX787 with a smaller sensor size than the IMX766, so it will be interesting to see how it performs. Well the 3.5x optical zoom lens is a 1/2” 64MP sensor.

alternative phone
With that rear camera spec I’d say it’s excellent Honor Magic4 Pro This is a possible alternative but costs £950.
you also have OPPO Find X5 Pro Or the OnePlus 10 Pro, which I think is the only other two phones with an ultra-wide-angle camera that has the same specs as the main camera, but both have lackluster zoom lenses. The OnePlus 10 Pro costs £800, while the OPPO is over £1000.

Next-generation UDC technology delivers spectacular images at a glance
ZTE has always focused on the under-screen camera technology, and continues to lead the evolution of the full-screen trend. As the third-generation commercial product with advanced UDC technology, Axon 40 Ultra brings innovative breakthroughs in creating a fully integrated screen while inheriting the previous generation.
The Axon 40 Ultra comes standard with a 400 PPI density and blue diamond pixel arrangement for a more detailed image. It also provides the industry’s first independent pixel drive technology and the circuit adopts distributed transparent routing, which eliminates circuit aggregation at the edge of the screen in the UDC area. These elements work together to provide a smoother image and a sharper screen display.
The MRC algorithm upgrade, intelligent pixel enhancement, and intelligent display optimization technology are integrated into the UDC Pro screen display chip to create a more
Precise and synchronized display. With a newly enhanced full-screen display, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is able to create a more immersive experience and deliver spectacular images around every corner.
In addition, the image quality of the front camera has also been greatly improved. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is equipped with a 16-megapixel front UDC, up to 2.24μm large pixel perfusion effect, resulting in higher sensitivity for the UDC area. Using deep learning AI technology helps improve Selfie Algorithm 3.0 to minimize noise. In a variety of lighting environments such as intelligent defogging and anti-glare, the image can also be calibrated in real time, which significantly improves image clarity and transparency. In addition, the Smart Beauty function further enhances the image quality of face shots.
Flagship-level screen configurations amplify the excitement. ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is equipped with a large 6.8-inch AMOLED screen, supports 1116*2480 resolution FHD+, peak brightness is up to 1500 nits, 100% coverage of DCI-P3 wide color gamut, 10bit color depth, and 1.07 billion color extreme display. The result is a powerful, immersive display that delivers exceptional image quality and stunning color. The 6.8-inch AMOLED display supports 120Hz high refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate. Combined with TUV Rheinland’s low blue light Eyesafe certification, the 1440Hz high-frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming function effectively reduces screen flicker in dark scenes and provides the highest level of eye protection.
Three main camera trinity system provides spectacular footage at every angle
While the full screen allows users to “see the limelight”, the main camera of ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has been fully upgraded to the industry’s best three-camera system “Trinity”, consisting of a 64-pixel user-friendly camera, a 64-megapixel ultra-high Wide-angle main camera and a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto main camera. The triple main cameras are powered by a powerful processor, allowing the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra to capture images in spectacular fashion.
The 64-megapixel user-friendly main camera and ultra-wide-angle main camera on the ZTE Axon 40 are equipped with the industry’s first two Sony IMX787 sensors. This configuration can achieve dual full-pixel omnidirectional focusing, which is faster and more accurate. In particular, the 64-megapixel portrait camera uses a 35mm equivalent focal length, a 7P lens and a large f/1.6 aperture to provide hardware-level optical blur effects. Combining the wide-angle and macro features, the ultra-wide-angle main camera uses a 16mm equivalent focal length and a 4cm AF macro to achieve ultra-low distortion on the curved surface. The periscope telephoto main camera uses a 91mm equivalent focal length and has a 5.7x optical zoom function from wide-angle to telephoto. Steadicam-level full-system image stabilization, OIS optical image stabilization + EIS image stabilization, every photo is outstanding.
Further advances have been made in computational photography. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is the only smartphone in the industry that supports 8k Ultra HD recording. It’s also the industry’s only triple-main camera smartphone with a snapshot feature that captures objects in motion through its custom adaptive shutter algorithm. Finally, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is the only triple-camera smartphone in the industry that supports preset focusing of all the main cameras. Users can manually preset the focus before shooting, thereby greatly shortening the focusing time.
In addition, the super night scene video function has also been significantly improved. The unique AI camera algorithm can improve image brightness and resolution when shooting videos in low-light areas. It also reduces noise and provides lifelike image quality. If that’s not enough, a variety of night sky photography function modes such as smart moon, star photography algorithm, and artificial intelligence constellation have also been added, allowing users to obtain excellent night photography capabilities. In addition to the user-friendly image color system, as well as rich Bresson black-and-white filters, film filters and other humanistic filters, users can experience a large number of interesting photo shoots in various photography and videography scenes through the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra.
