Lithuania seeks further help from EU countries

widthA video released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania on Tuesday shows that immigration has become a plaything of power politics. It can be seen that a dozen Belarusian security forces apparently pushed a group of migrants across the green border into Lithuania. The men put themselves behind people like a wall, and they wear a full set of protective equipment with helmets and shields, just like hooligans.

On the other hand, Lithuanian border guards are filming the scene and trying to block the way for strangers. They talked to her and moved forward; a young man, child, and woman who admitted to have a headscarf, there should be 35 people in total. An arrow is shown in the video to mark the state boundary. The Belarusian security forces are on the other side of this line, that is, already on Lithuanian territory.

This cannot be checked from the picture. There are no fortifications or visible markings at this point, only tall grass and wild shrubs—this is the case almost everywhere on the 680 km border between Lithuania and Belarus. For a long time, it seemed unnecessary. The two sides signed the Joint Border Security Treaty in 2009, and almost no violations were discovered by last summer.

However, when relations between Minsk and the European Union deteriorated rapidly after the fraudulent presidential election a year ago, cooperation was interrupted. When the European Union again strengthened its sanctions against the Alexander Lukashenko regime at the end of May, it publicly threatened to flood neighboring countries with immigration and drugs. This is how it happened: Lithuania has recorded 4,117 illegal border crossings this year, compared with 74 in the whole year last year.
