Raschelt on Afghanistan: Biden let me down

A sort ofAfter NATO’s “collapse” in Afghanistan, the coalition party’s prime minister candidate Raschelt has the US president Joe Biden Clearly criticize and call for a more determined European foreign policy towards the future. While thousands of Afghans were desperately trying to find a place on the evacuation planes of Germany and other countries at Kabul Airport, he also set the conditions for possible dialogue with Taliban representatives in an interview with FAS.

Regarding Biden, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia initially expressed admiration that the President of the United States is clearly committed to the transatlantic partnership. But then Raschelt added: “This is exactly what I was disappointed in his one-on-one statement on April 14th that he announced that he would implement the Afghan withdrawal order ordered by Donald Trump without allowing the allies to fully participate in this major decision. Reason.” This is also true for Germany. And Europe, it is best to coordinate with the United States. However, if necessary, “the EU must be able to act without a US partner. We must be able to secure airports like Kabul on our own. We need more Europe in foreign policy.”

“Afghanistan needs international assistance for a long time to come”

On the way there, the “avant-garde” of France, Germany and EU countries can lead the way. Raschelt emphasized that such deviations in foreign and security policies can also reduce the “East and West differences in the EU,” because Poland and the Baltic States will definitely be there. He also listed the Benelux, Italy and Spain as possible partners.

In response to the Afghan crisis, Lashet recommended an international initiative based on the Bonn Petersburg conference model, which tried to reorganize the country after NATO invaded Afghanistan two decades ago. People must work hard to “influence the Taliban so that the country will not become a haven for international terrorism.” The prospect of financial support can be used as a lever.
