a Reddit user Went to their corporate office in Irvine, CA and found the door was locked and the lights were off (but it was Saturday). Other users said the company’s phone number was also dead and that it did not respond to any support emails.
Insteeon has been pretty quiet on social media for the past year.
Insteon was founded in 2006 as a subsidiary of Smartlabs, Inc. Insteon smart home systems are built around the Insteon Hub, allowing light switches, lights, thermostats, motion sensors, and other electrical devices to interoperate frequency (RF) communication over power lines, radio, or both.
The company was acquired by Rob Lilleness and Richmond Capital Partners in 2017.
They have been a popular alternative to companies such as Lutron and Caseta, as well as open systems such as Zigbee and Z-Wave.
Unfortunately, Insteon is a proprietary system that relies heavily on access to cloud services. Insteon does allow for local control of some features, but for now, many users will now be faced with a dead smart home system. I noticed one user said they had 60+ Insteon switches and 5 motion sensors, but they wanted HomeAssistant to keep the system working.
A few years ago, I Den automation reviewed and worry about the risks of proprietary systems, and within a year, Company ceases trading. Thankfully for some users, when the company Phoenix and Become a Den Switch.
It looks like Insteon is very popular in the US. They don’t seem to gain much popularity in the UK. They launched in the UK back in 2013 and established a distribution agreement in 2015. Amazon UK has some stock, but few other retailers list anything.
