AInsights: Nvidia's advances in AI computing, AI-powered humanoid robots, and connecting Omniverse to Apple Vision Pro

Nvidia accelerates its push into the future of artificial intelligence and robotics at its annual GTC event.

NVIDIA recently made a series of important announcements at its annual GPU Technology Conference. This is not a news site, so I'll just cover what was announced and why it matters to you. I will share this news and then my AInsights…

1. Nvidia has launched the Blackwell and Grace Blackwell Superchip, which the company says is “the most powerful chip in the world.” Blackwell chips represent a major leap forward in AI performance and energy efficiency that will benefit businesses looking to adopt and expand AI into their operations. Cloud availability and software partnerships also make the technology easier to access and implement.

1.5 Intel has announced that its new artificial intelligence chip is coming soon. The company's new AI chips, including Gaudi3 and Core Ultra chips with neural processing units (NPUs), are designed to compete directly with Nvidia's industry-leading AI accelerators, such as the H100 chip. Intel will provide services to manufacturers such as Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo and AMD.

Improved artificial intelligence performance: Blackwell chips provide significantly greater processing power for artificial intelligence applications.

Improved energy efficiency: Nvidia emphasized the improved energy efficiency of Blackwell chips, saying that training a large AI model using 2,000 Blackwell chips would use 4 megawatts of power, compared with 15 megawatts of power using 8,000 older GPUs. This is important as enterprises increasingly focus on the carbon footprint and energy costs of running AI workloads.

Available through cloud providers: Major cloud providers such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle will provide access to Nvidia's new GB200 servers equipped with 72 Blackwell chips. This will make advanced AI capabilities more accessible to businesses of all sizes.

As far as Intel is concerned, Nvidia still maintains a significant lead in the AI ​​accelerator market, with an estimated 80% market share. Intel and AMD need to demonstrate clear performance and efficiency advantages to convince customers to abandon Nvidia's established ecosystem.

2. Nvidia announced that it will bring its Omniverse platform to Apple Vision Pro.

Nvidia Omniverse is an open, real-time platform for 3D design, collaboration and simulation. It is designed to enable universal interoperability between different applications and vendors, enabling efficient real-time scene updates.

The platform now supports the development of 3D workflows and applications for the new Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headset.

Nvidia's Omniverse provides enterprises (and developers) with a ready-made platform to integrate their 3D content and applications into the Vision Pro ecosystem.

Specifically, the Omniverse platform allows enterprises to deliver advanced 3D experiences to Vision Pro headsets, allowing them to easily deliver industrial 3D scenes and content to Nvidia's graphics-ready data centers. This allows enterprises to more seamlessly leverage Vision Pro for industrial and enterprise applications.

In addition, integrating Microsoft 365 productivity applications such as OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams into the Vision Pro experience powered by Omniverse provides enterprises with a familiar and integrated way to collaborate in virtual/mixed reality.

3. Nvidia has unveiled “Project GR00T,” a base model of a humanoid robot that represents the next wave of artificial intelligence and robotics.

Nvidia aims to power smart robots with GR00T (General Robot 00 Technology) to “understand natural language and imitate movements by observing human behavior.”

Nvidia also unveiled “Jetson Thor,” a new computer for humanoid robots that includes GenAI capabilities as part of its artificial intelligence-powered robotics initiative.
