NAfter the floods caused by heavy rains, the authorities in the US state of Tennessee revised the number of victims to at least 21 deaths on Sunday. According to a report in the Tennessee Daily, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, located about 100 kilometers west of Nashville, said that as many as 30 people remain unaccounted for. In addition, the mayor of Waverley in the county once stated that the youngest victim was only seven months old. The authorities have imposed a curfew on Sunday night.
US President Joe Biden delivered a speech at the White House to express condolences to the victims. He has instructed his team to pledge federal assistance to the governor of Tennessee. Biden said: “At this terrible moment, we provide all the support you need.”
After a rain from Friday night to Saturday noon (local time), flash floods broke out in many places. NBC said the National Guard is helping to rescue those affected.
The recording showed that the streets were flooded, vehicles were washed away, and buildings were severely damaged. According to ABC reports, power and mobile phone networks have also been disrupted. It said rainfall has reached record levels in the state.
The mayor of Waverley said on the local broadcaster WKRN that the storm was “almost as fast as a tornado” in central Tennessee.
The Civil Defense Agency stated that in addition to Humphreys and Waverly, the Dixon, Hickman and Houston areas were also severely affected by the floods. Rainfall was between 22 and 43 cm in the six hours on Saturday morning. The storm only subsided at night.
