review -During the pandemic, I think a lot of us have upgraded our work a bit from home. For my son, it was his room and he decided to “go all out” with strip lighting. Basically, his room looked a lot like a Las Vegas hotel room. As a pleasant surprise to this aesthetic, I decided to review the Cololight Hexagon Pro LED Light Kit. These honeycomb-shaped lamps can be used as lamps or wall mounted, and they respond to music. They’re great, but not without a few hiccups.
What is it?
The Cololight Hexagon Pro Light Kit lets you take 12 puck-sized light boards and connect them together to create creative shapes to hang on the wall or use as lights. The panels can be set to any of 16 million colors, they respond to music, and they can be controlled via Alexa or Google.

feature
Once I got the Cololight Hexagon Pro LED light kit, I ripped open the box and installed the app. I watched a little video on how to put them together, and I decided to test them out as a freestanding light, and then if my son wanted to mount them on the wall, I’d leave it to him. Still, wall-mounted looks simple enough. All you have to do is create your design using the wall mount and attach it to the wall like a template and mark where the screws are. Pre-Drilled and Installed – Unless you have a large or fancy design, this seems really easy. If you do, I think it might take two people, one to support the design and the other to mark where the screws are and assist with the installation.

I tried several designs, you will notice from the pictures. They are very easy to put together, so you can easily change the design at any time. You can design a heart for Valentine’s Day and a tree for Christmas. You can change it every day if you want! The app allows you to create your own lighting schemes, or use any of the preset designs. They also have changing animation designs. There are 19 individual lamp beads inside each light panel, which means color and light are evenly distributed across the panels, and if you want to mix from one color to another, the app you download allows your panels to have Gradient quality. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the level of control and flexibility they provide, but when I first set them up, it wasn’t all butterflies and roses.

You may notice that the power supply is not included in this kit, which I think is a big mistake. I mean, these aren’t cheap lights – my kit is $169, and at that price I think they’ll include one. I searched around my house (just like you) and found one, but I can’t get the lights to respond to the app. They connect, but they get stuck and I can’t turn them on or off or change the color. Then I noticed that in the manual for the ultra-small text, you need a 5V/2A power supply. If not, it may cause malfunction. Well, I was looking around the house again and found more and less wattage power supplies, but none of them were exactly 5V/2A. No other power supply works with the light. In the name of serving you, dear reader, I fired up that Amazon app and ordered a suitable power supply for $5. It’s on my doorstep in 24 hours and voila! Everything is perfect. So please check your power supply before ordering. I’m sure this company spends pennies to ensure customers have a good experience, but they choose to save a dollar and risk having people return the stuff (which I would have done because I was so frustrated!)

Another thing you should know is that if you’re using the Cololight Hexagon Pro LED Light Kit as a freestanding light, you should probably make sure it’s set up where it won’t be disturbed. I created my design upstairs and moved it to the kitchen counter to tinker with the application, but it barely survived. Then my kid hit it with his backpack and it collapsed. It’s no big deal – it’s super easy to put it back together – but having to do it over and over can be annoying. I’m sure some designs are sturdier than others – mine are fairly refined, but again, if these are located in busy areas, wall mounts would be a better option.
These lights also work with Alexa and Google. I connected mine to Alexa and it was easy.

what do I like
- so many cool designs
- the app is fun
what would i change
- Maybe a more robust component that doesn’t break down easily.
- I would include a proper power supply. Not including such a critical part of the device is puzzling.

final thoughts
Overall, once I got them working, I really liked the Cololight Hexagon Pro LED Light Kit lights.
