The Cyprus government said on Monday (August 23) that it would revoke the passports of Turkish Cypriot officials from the Separated State in the northern part of the island.
It is known that some Turkish Cypriot officials, including the current leader Ersin Tatar, hold or hold passports of the Republic of Cyprus, even though they administer the Turkish Cypriot country.
In 1974, after a brief coup inspired by Greece, this eastern Mediterranean island was divided by the Turkish invasion. Northern Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey, while the Republic of Cyprus, which is governed by Greek Cypriots, is internationally recognized.
The current Cyprus government has made billions of dollars by selling passports to thousands of Russian oligarchs and fugitives from Malaysia and well-connected Cambodians, claiming that the actions of the Turkish Cypriots undermined the integrity of Cyprus.
Attempts to reunify have repeatedly failed. Relations are at a new low in the maritime energy reserve dispute. The Turkish Cypriots demand peace negotiations on a new basis. Turkey has taken action to open up part of the walled city abandoned by it. Residents in the 1974 war.
The spokesperson of the Cyprus government, Marios Pelekanos, said that Cyprus will revoke, not renew or refuse to issue passports to individuals who participate in the “pseudo-national cabinet” or try to reopen Varosha.
“Their actions and actions undermined the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Cyprus and violated the Constitution,” Pelekanos said.
The Turkish Cypriot authorities announced in July that they would partially reopen the suburbs of Varosha Beach for resettlement, but they were strongly condemned by the Greek Cypriots, who considered this to be land grabbing.
This area has always been a Turkish military zone, and settlement has not been allowed for decades.
Local media reported that the Tatar, a staunch supporter of Turkish Cypriot independence, obtained a Cyprus passport in 2000. The Tatar is the son of a famous technocrat. He was from the United Kingdom as a consultant in the negotiations for the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960 after independence.
