The Danish government announced that Denmark plans to rent 300 cells in Kosovo for prisoners who will be deported after serving their sentences.
The Danish Ministry of Justice stated in a statement that the project aims to alleviate overcrowding in prisons and will expand the area of prisons in Denmark by 326 locations between 2022 and 2025.
Last year, 350 prisoners will be deported at the end of their sentences.
According to official statistics, the prison population in Denmark has grown by 19% since 2015, reaching more than 4,000 prisoners by the beginning of 2021, exceeding 100% of its capacity.

“By 2025, there will be a shortage of up to 1,000 places in our prisons,” Attorney General Nick Hækkerup said in a statement.
