MediaTek demos Wi-Fi 7, claims speeds 2.4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6

I’m almost done Netgear RBKE960 Orbi Mesh Wi-Fi 6E system, the first Wi-Fi 6E Equipment entered the UK market.

However, MediaTek is already preparing for Wi-Fi 7. Today they announced the world’s first live demonstration of Wi-Fi 7 technology, highlighting the capabilities of their upcoming Wi-Fi 7 Filogic connectivity portfolio. MediaTek is currently showing two Wi-Fi 7 demos to key customers and industry partners to showcase the technology’s ultra-fast and low-latency transmissions.

Wi-Fi 6 is just going mainstream, and Wi-Fi 6E hardware is expensive, you might be wondering what’s new in Wi-Fi 7?

Wi-Fi 7 vs Wi-Fi 6 – what’s new?

Quick overview:

  • Wi-Fi 7 supports channel widths of up to 320MHz on the 6Ghz band, double that of previous generations. This will give 1.2Gbps per stream (160MHz) to 2.4Gbps per stream (320MHz). Therefore, a 4×4 broadcaster can have up to 9.6Gbps of bandwidth.
  • In fact, assuming 2×2 clients like current hardware, you’ll be able to connect at speeds up to 4.8Gbps.
  • Wi-Fi 7 quadruples QAM to 4096. This is basically how much information can be provided per Hertz,
  • Taking into account the increased QAM, Wi-Fi 7 also supports up to 16 partial streams with a possible 40Gbps bandwidth.
  • Wi-Fi 7 enables multi-link operation, which can combine two frequency bands into one, such as 5GHz and 6Ghz. This can then be used as load balancing or failover. A load balancer allows the bandwidth of both bands to be combined into a single link to increase bandwidth.

As such, Wi-Fi 7 should offer some major improvements in Wi-Fi speeds, which MediaTek claims is the first time Wi-Fi can be a true Ethernet replacement for ultra-high-bandwidth applications.

Products with Wi-Fi 7 are expected to start hitting the market in 2023.

MediaTek today announced the world’s first live demonstration of Wi-Fi 7 technology, highlighting the capabilities of its upcoming Wi-Fi 7 Filogic connectivity portfolio.

MediaTek is currently showing two Wi-Fi 7 demos to key customers and industry partners to showcase the technology’s ultra-fast and low-latency transmissions.

“The launch of Wi-Fi 7 will mark the first time that Wi-Fi has truly become a wired/Ethernet alternative for ultra-high-bandwidth applications,” said Alan Hsu, Vice President and General Manager of the Smart Connectivity Business at MediaTek. “MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 7 The technology will be the backbone of home, office and industrial networks and provide seamless connectivity for everything from multiplayer AR/VR applications to cloud gaming and 4K calling to 8K streaming.”

MediaTek’s demo showed how its Wi-Fi 7 Filogic technology achieves the maximum speeds defined by IEEE 802.11be and showcased its Multi-Link Operation (MLO) technology. MLO technology aggregates multiple channels on different frequency bands simultaneously to highlight how network traffic can flow seamlessly even when there is interference or congestion on the frequency band. MLO technology is critical for delivering faster, more reliable video streaming, gaming, and anything else that requires constant, sustained, and real-time throughput.

MediaTek has been involved in the development of the Wi-Fi 7 standard since its inception, and the company was one of the first adopters of Wi-Fi 7 technology.

“Consumers today expect always-on, reliable and fast Wi-Fi connectivity for many applications such as video calling, 4K/8K TV entertainment, real-time gaming, and more,” said Moon Ho Lee, president of Mercury Korea. “MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 7 technology addresses the current needs of all the applications consumers enjoy today, and opens the door to future AR/VR applications that we can’t even imagine today.”

What’s unique about Wi-Fi 7 is that it brings new capabilities to all of the available spectrum Wi-Fi uses, including 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz. Wi-Fi 7 will be 2.4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6 — even with the same number of antennas — because Wi-Fi 7 can utilize 320Mhz channels and support 4K Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) technology. Other notable features of Wi-Fi 7 include MLO to reduce latency by transmitting Wi-Fi over multiple frequency bands, and Multi-User Resource Unit (MRU) capability for enhanced interference avoidance and mitigation.

Products with Wi-Fi 7 are expected to start hitting the market in 2023.
