review – I always touch my phone while working. It’s embarrassing. But look at me now! Thanks to the Rolling Square Edge kit, my laptop and phone are in perfect harmony. Not only does this kit mount my phone next to my money maker, but it also adds some extra features. Let’s find out more. to the review!

What is it?

The Rolling Square Edge Kit is an accessory kit designed to mount your phone to your laptop…with options.

What’s in this box?

I’ve got the entire Rolling Square Edge kit line up for my testing, which includes a mounting arm, a USB-powered MagSafe wireless charger, and a connectable light for video conferencing. You can also purchase a carrying case for your gear.

Hardware Specifications

  • CNC machine aluminum structure
  • N52 Magnet
  • The Edge light has a maximum brightness of 280 lumens with three-level control and a 140 MaH battery capacity
  • Edge Universal Wireless Charger offers 7.5w, 10W or 15W output
  • All accessories are USB-C compatible (cable included)

Design and Features

Rolling Square Edge kits come in a variety of configurations and packages, but they all start the Edge Mount. The Edge Mount is a slim aluminum arm that you attach to the back of your laptop with tape on the base. The arm is then rotated outward, using the magnets on the arm to mount the phone. It’s a slim, sturdy little part that you barely notice on the back of your computer when it’s in the closed position.

This is the complete Rolling Square Edge kit that includes many beautifully designed accessories. That white piece of plastic helps you remove the base from the laptop if you want to take it off. You also get a second sticky pad so you can stick it on another device. In addition to these bits, you’ll also get a sticky magnet that you can attach to the back of your phone for extra grip.

That printed cardboard label is a guide you can use to center the magnet on the back of the phone.

The kit is perfectly compatible with MagSafe devices and may not require an additional magnetic handle. For those of us with older phones like mine, the extra magnets help hold it in place. This can also be mounted on your phone case.

Once set up, you just swing your arm, pop the phone into place, and you’re good to go!

The Universal Wireless Charger is an upgrade to the base mount that adds a magnetic USB-C powered wireless charging disk to your arsenal. Like the mounting kit, the wireless charger kit includes a guide to place extra magnetic rings if you need them.

This is how the magnetic ring looks compared to a basic disk. Note that if you opted for the wireless charger, you don’t need both, as the ring locks onto the beveled edge on the charging tray.

The wireless charger attaches to the mounting kit via magnets on the arm while plugging the USB-C cable into whatever power source is connected. I have a multiport adapter for my MacBook Pro that I show here.

Now that you put your phone in place, you’ll get juice on a regular basis.

This is what the rig looks like from the back.

The last accessory is the Edge Light, and the LED disc also mounted on the Edge Mount Kit. The kit comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable for powering the lights.

This also connects to edge mounts. You have a button on Edge Light that enables three different brightness levels. The light also has its own battery, so you can disconnect it and use it on its own or on the base.

Finally, Rolling Square offers a slim carrying case for all your cables and accessories.

Performance

The Rolling Square Edge Kit is a seemingly solid piece of gear. Despite its sturdy construction, the mounting kit itself is only 4.5mm deep and attaches securely to your laptop. It’s slim enough to not get in the way when you slide the money-tool in and out of the bag, but sturdy enough that it won’t come loose if bumped. All components are well made, lightweight and reliable if you’ve been on the go. No questions or concerns to report there.

If you play around with your phone and laptop a lot, you’re going to love this device. Whether I’m at work or at home, I’m constantly on my phone to manage music, check email, play podcasts, Google… you name it. The Rolling Square Edge kit is great for keeping my phone in a place where it’s easily accessible at all times. I find this especially useful at work or in my home office where desk space is always at a premium. You’ll also find this useful if you’re dual-screening on your laptop while you’re gaming or watching a movie, rather than fumbling for your phone on the coffee table or when it’s dropped between the cushions. It’s also great for visiting a coffee shop or waiting for your flight to board. You need one less hand to manage all your things.

I also found that the accessories are well designed to be integrated into the core package. The wireless charger saves you an extra carry-on accessory, and can work on or from the mounting arm as a standalone wireless charger (you still need to plug it in). Lightboxes provide powerful, focused lighting for web meetings, and I find it very handy when I find myself in random places that aren’t well lit. The lights also work on the mounting kit and can be used wirelessly when charged. Suitcases are a great option for commuting and travel, and they’re less than $10. It’s worth managing all the parts as a plugin, especially if you have the full kit.

However, we do have to discuss device compatibility. Edge products are best paired with iPhone MagSafe devices (12 and up) that have internal magnets. If that’s what you have, you’re ready to snap it in and out of the box, no extra magnets required.

However, if your phone isn’t MagSafe compatible, things get a little trickier.

My phone is an iPhone XS max, so it doesn’t have built-in magnets. The installation guide is great for centering the included sticky magnets perfectly on the back of the phone, but I found the phone would slowly slide off the magnets over a long period of time. I expect this is because my phone is heavier and has a smooth finish. I had better luck when I attached the magnets to the case, but then I couldn’t take advantage of the wireless charging module.

We did extensively test the Rolling Square Edge kit (without the extra magnets) on my son’s iPhone 12 and had no issues with these. Most importantly, you need to check your phone for the best compatibility.

what do I like

  • A slim, elegant solution for managing your phone alongside your laptop.
  • Well made and easy to install.
  • The other accessories provided in the kit work seamlessly with the base and do their job well.

Areas for improvement

  • Not compatible with all mobile phones.

final thoughts

I really like the design and execution of the Rolling Square Edge Kit. It solves a common device management problem, and you can leverage all components in one well-integrated solution. Keep in mind that this kit works best with newer MagSafe iPhones; you’ll want to check compatibility with older devices.

Price: $19.00 for base mount, up to $74.00 if you buy the entire kit. The lamp and charger can also be purchased separately. The pouch retails for $19.00 (currently 50% off) and you can purchase additional replacement adhesive components and magnets.
