review – Battery-powered lawn mowers have several benefits over their gasoline-powered cousins: no more trips to the gas station, no oil, no worries about burning off all the gas before winter storage, less noise from neighbors, etc. .Last year was my first time using a battery powered lawn mower, unfortunately That one is too small and underpowered. I’m back this year with another lawn mower, this one from Ryobi, a well-known power tool maker. Does it have the ability to mow my yard, which is a combination of weeds and zoysia?Read on to learn more Ryobi’s 18V ONE+ lawn mower.

Design and Features

The Ryobi 18V ONE+ lawn mower looks like every other battery powered lawn mower Lawn mowerAlmost every visible part of the mower is plastic, except for the handle bar, the metal bar for the bagger, and the metal bar for changing the height of the mower. Its colors are a mix of black and Ryobi’s signature bright yellow, along with plenty of Ryobi and ONE+ branding. On top of the mower is a compartment for the security key and battery. The grass bag hangs from the rear of the mower and can be replaced with a plug when mulching. Overall, there’s nothing new or interesting about this design, but as the old adage goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

installation and setup

When the box arrived, I was a little scared of its contents. The box is thin and obviously took a hit in transit. Also, the lightweight tape holding the box in place was mostly torn, leaving a good portion of the top of the box open. Ryobi has a lot to learn about protecting large lawn equipment while in transit. Thankfully, nothing was damaged or missing as far as I can tell. However, there is a random screw on the bottom of the box and I still don’t know where it came from.

The Ryobi includes three different manuals, one for the mower, one for the charger, and one for the battery. The mower arrived partially assembled, so I started with the mower manual to see how to complete the assembly. I don’t like this manual at all. It has a 1980s vibe and the style is not very helpful. The pictures are small, the steps are unclear, the text is mixed in multiple languages, difficult to read, etc. I figured out how to assemble this mower, but it’s safe to say I did it despite the manual, not because of it.

Using the charger is as simple as plugging it in and then inserting the battery. It can only charge one at a time. The charger has no less than three LEDs:

  • Orange – Indicates the battery is too hot or too cold to charge
  • Red – Indicates the battery is charging
  • Green – Indicates the battery is charged

Once the batteries were fully charged (about 90 minutes each), I plugged in the safety key and battery, and I was off to go!

Performance

The Ryobi 18V ONE+ lawn mower can be mulched or bagged. If you want to cover, there is a plastic plug that can be inserted into the hole on the rear of the mower. Since I want to add grass clippings around my blackberry bushes, I choose to use a bagger most of the time. The bag is a typical nylon bag that allows air to circulate while keeping out the grass. It attaches to the mower using a pair of metal clips, which is a standard method. The bag itself is not that big. I found that it took just over two minutes on average to fill up. This means I’m going to be doing a lot of stops and emptyings. At least it’s easy to remove the bag, empty it, and reconnect.

The airflow at the rear of the mower is not very strong. When I mow wet grass, the bagger doesn’t work well because all the grass gets stuck behind the mower. However, it works fine as long as the grass is dry.

Perhaps the coolest feature of this lawn mower is its height adjustment mechanism. On my gas lawn mower, I really have to Remove the tire with a wrench Change the height; it’s too bad. On this Ryobi mower, however, all I have to do is use the lever located on the side of the mower; it lowers or raises all four wheels simultaneously. I think it’s really smooth. It has seven different mowing heights ranging from 1.5 to 4 inches in height. I usually keep the mower in the third-lowest position and it works well for my yard.

Starting the Ryobi 18V ONE+ lawn mower is easy. I hold down one of the handles and press the button. I found that this lawn mower was just one click every time it was started.

Here’s the most important question about the Ryobi 18V ONE+ lawn mower: how powerful is it? Can it mow my lawn without pausing and stopping all the time?Although the power of this lawnmower is still not my gas lawn mower, it was enough to cut through the thickest grass in my yard. These still cause the mower to stall, but rarely cause it to stop. Whenever I hit thicker grass, the battery gave the engine more power to get through. This push lawn mower works great. I am very pleased with Ryobi’s ability to get out of this ONE+ system.

I made a short video to show some features of the lawn mower and show how it works in my yard:

What size yard is this lawn mower suitable for? As I mentioned, the grass catcher is very small. The blade length is 16 inches, which is much smaller than most entry-level pneumatic push mowers, which are usually 20 or 21 inches. Ryobi estimates 40 minutes of use per battery, but I found their average to be well below that. I never got more than 15 minutes of runtime from a fully charged battery.

Ryobi says the 18V ONE+ mower is designed for yards of a quarter acre or less. Given the size of the blade and bag catcher, that estimate seems correct, but with these batteries, I think the quarter acre is pretty optimistic. Either I’ll need to buy two or (more likely) four extra batteries, or I’ll have to mow the lawn in three days, not all at once. Ryobi does sell Backup Batteries for Home Depot.

They also sell mowers with bigger blades, but you have to pay for the bigger ones. This 16-inch lawn mower is just $280, and 21-inch mowers start at $500. they also have battery powered lawn mowerlooks great (but costs $5600!).

Extra features

There’s a sturdy handle on the top to pick up the entire mower, and since the mower is made of plastic, I can pick it up with one hand.

For those with a smaller garage or shed, the Ryobi 18V ONE+ lawn mower can be stored upright. To do this, I removed the bagger, loosened the four knobs, folded the handlebars, and propped up the mower. It does save a little space.

what do I like

  • enough power to mow my lawn
  • Clever height adjustment system
  • Two batteries and a charger
  • light
  • decent price

what would i change

  • Improved packaging of boxes in transit.
  • Write clearer, clearer manuals.
  • Ship batteries with more than 15 minutes of runtime.

final thoughts

The Ryobi 18V ONE+ lawn mower is part of Ryobi’s ONE+ line of power tools and lawn equipment. The blade is only 16 inches, making it suitable for smaller lawns, but it makes up for it at the smaller price. In my testing, I found this mower powerful enough to handle all but the thickest grasses in my yard. I especially like the height adjustment mechanism and its ability to fold for storage. However, I was very disappointed with the battery’s total runtime. Ryobi said they would last 40 minutes, but I actually lasted less than 15 minutes. I like a lot about this mower; if the battery reaches the Ryobi’s estimate, then I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. However, given their short run time, I can’t really recommend it to you unless you’re willing to buy more batteries or spend three days mowing your lawn.
