The court declared a total ban on abortion unconstitutional

MeterThe exikos Supreme Court declared an absolute prohibition of abortion unconstitutional. On Tuesday, ten judges unanimously decided in Mexico City that when protecting fetuses, women’s right to freedom of reproduction must not be ignored. As the court announced.

The decision is related to the abortion ban in the northern state of Coahuila, which is being processed by the court. However, it set a national precedent. This made Mexico the most populous country with a Catholic majority, and abortion was legalized.

So far, Mexico has no uniform regulations

The judge held that abortion, rape, acts that endanger the health of the pregnant woman or the fetus’s infertility should not constitute a criminal offence. The court did not define the early stage. This should be left to the states.

In North American countries with a population of approximately 126 million, there is currently no uniform regulation. So far, only the capital and four of the 31 states allow abortion within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

At the end of last year, the Argentine Parliament of South America legalized abortion before the 14th week of pregnancy. In most other Latin American countries that are also Catholics, abortion is only allowed under special circumstances. They are only legal in smaller states such as Uruguay, Cuba, Guyana and French Guiana.
