The United States on Thursday (November 18) urged Georgia to provide humane treatment to the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili. According to reports, he has been on a hunger strike for several weeks and is currently in critical condition.
“We urge the Georgian government to treat Mr. Saakashvili with fairness and dignity,” State Department spokesperson Ned Rice said.
“We also strongly urge the Georgian government to ensure that Mr. Saakashvili can attend court hearings in all pending criminal cases in accordance with international law.”
After returning from exile in Ukraine, Saakashvili, who refused to eat for 49 days in protest of imprisonment, was transferred to the prison hospital due to his deteriorating health.
