A sort ofMazon is clearly preparing for the next offensive to enter the fixed retail sector with a new store format. According to the Wall Street Journal, the group plans to open several large stores in its home market, reminiscent of department stores, and offer a wide range of products, including clothing, electronics and household goods. But this will make them smaller than traditional American department stores.
Amazon is well-known as an online retailer, so the life of traditional retailers has been difficult for many years. Recently, however, the group itself has made some progress in physical trading. This started with the opening of a bookstore in 2015. It has now developed into a complete chain store and currently has nearly 25 locations. In 2017, the group acquired the Whole Foods supermarket chain for approximately US$13 billion. The chain mainly deals in high-quality food and operates more than 500 stores in North America and the United Kingdom.
This is by far the most expensive acquisition in Amazon’s history. The store concept of “Amazon Go” has attracted a lot of attention in the industry. These small grocery stores, due to their superb technology, do not need any cash registers or cashiers to pass the customs. There are currently 16 locations. In addition, the company has about 30 stores called “Amazon 4-star”, which offer a wide variety of products that score particularly high in customer ratings on Amazon.com. Through the department store chain, Amazon will enter a market segment that is struggling in the United States and Germany. Several U.S. department store chains have recently filed for bankruptcy. Amazon achieved 16.2 billion U.S. dollars in total sales last year through its physical stores.
