Design and features
This lamp has a slim design and the outer shell is made of aluminum alloy, which feels very strong. If it happens to fall off, it can withstand several bumps and scratches. Although the LCD panel is small, it is bright and easy to read. The LCD screen is only about 1 inch (25.4 mm) wide and 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) high. However, it would be better to double the screen. LCD is basically a menu screen, which displays all settings from hue and color to saturation, brightness to battery power.
Along the side of the video light, there are round metal buttons for power/mode, a setting button, an increase button, and a decrease button. These metal buttons are responsive and make a nice clicking sound when pressed. Continue along the bottom below the button is the USB-C port, used to charge the video light. This video light has a battery life of up to 2.5 hours at 100% brightness. It also takes about 3 hours to fully charge this video light.
There are two 14 inch tripod threaded mounts, one on the bottom of the video light and the other on the other side of the button. It’s nice to see that there is an additional 14″ inch threaded mount on the side, in case you need to place the video light in a vertical position instead of a horizontal position. This makes the way to use the video light more flexible.
Once you know the purpose of each button on the side, you can easily get the desired color by operating this light. The top buttons are the power button and the mode button, represented by the power icon and the letter M. The mode function switches between constant light and lighting effects. Then, the next button is the SET button, a bit like the Select button. It will switch between the options you adjusted on the LCD screen. Below the SET button is the plus button, and the last button is the minus button.
Since there are nine lighting effects (0-8) available, you can use the plus and minus buttons to scroll through the lighting effects. You can choose to adjust the brightness of the lighting effect from 100% all the way to 0%. To adjust the brightness level, you only need to press the SET button, and the small arrow will move from the light effect icon to the brightness icon. After selecting the brightness icon, you can use the plus and minus buttons to adjust.
These lights are composed of 60 LED lamp beads, which can emit a considerable amount of light, but there are more LED lights below.
On the back of the lamp is a small chart, if you want to dial a certain color for the lamp, you can refer to it. I set the lights to these numbers and found them to be very accurate with the listed colors. Remember, I didn’t use any color hexadecimal code reader or anything, just what I observed with my eyes. However, it is a good way to refer to the numbers on the chart to find the desired color.
Performance
The lighting effect is very good and it is most suitable for video rather than photography. When using this effect in a photo, you really won’t feel the feeling of lightning or a police car. However, if you are shooting a video and need to simulate lightning or the red and blue lights of a police car, then this RGB light will work well. Since this is an RGB light, changing the color of the light will greatly enhance or highlight the mood and feeling of your photos or videos. This kind of light is a great addition to content creators and can be placed in their gear bag.
Using its 60 LED beads, I found that the light output is not as bright as I expected. It emits a considerable amount of light within the close range of your subject. However, if you want to use this kind of light in a wider or larger open area, unless the room or location is quite dark, the intensity really doesn’t exist. Even if I use it as a continuous white video light, I cannot be too far away from the person I am shooting, otherwise they will not be illuminated. Don’t get me wrong, this light is very useful for me when I shoot some photos and videos in a dimly lit club. It provides a considerable amount of light for me to shoot and photograph people. In addition, when I shoot with this light, the light will not be too bright to blind people or make me stand out. But for me, when I need extra light, I hope I can choose to make the light brighter. Essentially, this kind of light is more suitable as a fill light rather than a main light. In other words, you can certainly use it as the main light, but you won’t get a lot of light compared to using a more powerful light source.
One thing I noticed is that this RGB light never gets hot. I kept the lamp at 100% brightness for an hour, and then put my hand on the LED lamp bead. I found that I could put my hands there without feeling any heat that could burn me.
Since special effect lighting is a major feature of this lamp, the speed of the effect cannot be adjusted. I think the variable speed of the effect will be good. For example, if you want the lightning effect to flash faster or slower in your video, or if you want the “breathing” or pulsed light effect to change smoothly or faster, you must be able to adjust the speed to make the effect more flexible.
