James Gunn’s “Suicide Squad” actually made me like superhero movies again – RedState

Once the “Avengers: Endgame” scored points, I almost completed the superhero genre. Although I am not opposed to seeing a new entry, I will not completely rack my brains for the next part of the high-octane superhuman activity.

For DC movies, this doubles. Obviously, Warner Bros. is trying to compete with Disney/Marvel in this genre, but they are not making progress. They try to be dark and tough, they try to be easy and fun, no matter what they do, they can’t compete with the Mouse House.

It has released a lot of bad movies, but the worst is arguably the 2016 “Suicide Squad”. The tacky dialogue and chaotic plot made this movie almost unbearable. Even Will Smith and Margot Robbie, two actors who did their best to play their roles, could not stop the movie from becoming a pile of steaming garbage, which may be attributed to Warner Bros. You can say that the movie was deliberate and it was one thing, but the studio intervened halfway through and made it another thing, thus making a movie that sometimes seems to have multiple personality disorders.

until Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn In some old tweets containing pedophile jokes, the fortunes of Warner Bros. will get better. The only good news that looks promising in the DC Universe is that when Disney decided to leave it, Warner quickly pulled it up to retrieve it.They announced that Gunn would make his own suicide squad movie

It finally dropped over the weekend, and the box office numbers were nothing funny.Pull it in Only 72.5 million USD In the first few days of theaters, its production and marketing budget was well below US$285 million. Although disappointing, it was not entirely unexpected. Delta Variant makes moviegoers nervous about appearing in their seats, and it also appears on HBO Max, where most of its audience may sit and watch. Therefore, although the number is insufficient, Warner Bros. did not fully call it a loss. As long as it promotes subscriptions to the HBO streaming service, the parent company Warner can call it a victory.

But despite the poor box office numbers, is there any benefit to this movie? In short… it may be one of my favorite superhero movies so far.

To be clear, the “Suicide Squad” is the Guardian of the Galaxy without Disney’s family-friendly temperance. When creating this movie, Gunn insisted on the mentality of “If it is not broken, don’t fix it”, and his previous work as the director of Guardians is vividly reflected in all aspects from character interaction to prototype. He has a Groot and a little Groot, Sylvester Stallone’s “Shark King”, and a clever but very cute mouse. He showed his ability and confidence in the form of Idris Elba’s “Bloodsport”, but it was full of comedy. He has an awkward label and strange power in David Dastmalchian’s “Polka Dot Man”. He even managed to integrate Drax and Rocket Raccoon into John Cena’s role as “Peacemaker.”

But when Gunn provided the Guardians of the Galaxy “DC version”, it did not get tired. You will never have the feeling of “seen before”. The characters are their own, and they are very interesting. The cast includes Suicide Squad alumni Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Colonel Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), who now feel more pleasant and comprehensive in Gunn’s hands. Quinn is no longer a “bad guy” in the movie just to attract the audience. She is now a capable fighter, and her madness is actually related to the plot. Flag was also infused with likable abilities, maintaining his status as an ordinary person, while trying to adapt to the inappropriate people he was assigned to lead.

There is a slight spoiler ahead.

Gunn brings these characters into a plot full of twists, amazing actions and funny moments.

On the one hand, he quickly lets you understand that this is not the previous suicide squad, and the belt has been removed. He first killed members of the previous suicide squad in the first few scenes of the movie, including Jai Courtney’s “Captain Boomerang”, as well as Flag and Quinn. When each member achieves their goals, the action is also bloody and lively.

When the dust settled, Gunn’s own suicide squad arrived at the scene and began a series of events, from ridiculous to dark comedy. Bloodsport and Peacemaker have been trying to compete with each other in terms of killing ability, and Cena gave a line about his killing style, which actually made me laugh out loud. The Shark King tried to eat a squad member, which led the two to embark on a path of friendship, and repeated jokes about the dot man’s mother being the driving force of his violence were staged in a legally funny way.

This movie doesn’t take itself seriously. It shouldn’t be serious at this stage of the superhero movie boom, but it’s not lazy either. Although a bit silly, this story is actually very creative and the characters are well written. I am not satisfied with the ending, but hope they have more interaction. There are even moments in the film, when one of the gangs is in danger or feeling sad, your heartstrings will be affected.

Obviously, what is missing from Suicide Squad IP is Gunn and his film production brand. He did it, so this movie is not try Have fun like its predecessor, it Yes Having fun. If you like black humor and stupid action movies, then “Suicide Squad” is definitely worth watching.

More importantly, other studios may need to pay attention. At this stage of genre development, Gunn just set the standard.
